It’s been over 2 years since we last spoke!

what has changed in that time?

So much and yet…nothing at all. I’m still the same ghoul who loves Halloween enough to write a blog about it all year. I’ve gotten to attend Midsummer Scream twice, which was a dream, and even spoke at it last year. I’ve met a TON of my Halloween friends in-person, which I love. I’ve visited Sleepy Hollow and Anoka, MN – both fun spooky spots in the U.S. I even moved to the other side of my apartment building and moved in with a ghost! But she’s pretty quiet these days.
People  like to tell us,  Halloween Addiction is just a phaze, and that we will grow out of it. Do you still love Halloween as strong now , as you did 2 years ago? Or has the magic dimmed?

I absolutely love Halloween just as much as I did last time we chatted – possibly even more. I talk often about how I started my blog on a whim, but I really think I was meant to go on this adventure. I feel like I’ve really found myself by embracing my inner weirdo even more. It’s also brought a ton of amazing friends into my life I wouldn’t have otherwise known.

Halloween has gotten more and more popular these past few years.
With popularity , comes oppertunity. I cannot tell you how disappointing it is , to see all my US ghouls , not getting their annual , favourite Halloween items , Solely due to Anti-Halloween people raiding the stores in June , Bulk buy the most highly sawn after  decorations , for then to go sell them for 4 times its value ,on Ebay.

Do you feel Halloween has lost its magic now that it has become “Popular”?

Not at all! I know there are certain products or brands that are highly sought-after during the Halloween season, but I’ve never been super interested in that kind of stuff. Shopping for Halloween is a blast – and I know we all love seeing it on Instagram – but for me, Halloween is a feeling. It’s something in the air. It’s a certain glow of the setting sun in October. Christmas lost its magical feel for me the older I got, but Halloween never has…and I don’t think it ever will. It’s where I feel like I belong.

AF93AE31-E974-47D4-8020-168A0273D431

What is the best part of celebrating Halloween?

The best part for me is feeling like I get to step into the spooky world I create the rest of the year on my blog and social media. I love seeing stores filled with Halloween décor, pumpkins outside grocery stores and people in costumes.
We are all living in some quite stressful times these days, so the need to get spooky , has now reach a point to were its crucial .

What do you do to get yourself in that spooky mood?

I’ve been sharing blog posts with Halloween spins on things people are gravitating towards right now – stuff like Halloween puzzles, coloring pages and virtual tours. I hope they help my spooky friends fill their days, try something new and get a little dose of Halloween spirit.

A79659D6-E01F-4CD2-8E4A-7A901820B3AF

I’ve also been hosting Instagram Lives regularly on my account where I interview some of my friends, small businesses and more. They’ve been a fun escape and, honestly, a fun way for me to fill my days and stay busy. I hope others have enjoyed them too and discovered a new account or two to follow!
October is still some months away , so the Corona rules of social distancing will hopefully have been lifted by then . But in worst case scenario , Some of us have starting planning a virtual Halloween party. Where all the spooky ghouls and goblins would do a group video call and celebrate the best day of the year , together , from all around the world!

I know you have an annual Halloween party , but is a virtual Halloween party something you would do/attend?

I think a virtual party would be a blast! I’d definitely attend.

When I’m feeling down , I always re-watch my favourite Halloween/Horror movies.
Nothing removes stress more, than watching pumpkins getting carved , or a spooky story.

What movies/series do you watched to get your unholy spirit lifted?

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is my default these days. I’d die to live in the Spellman Mortuary. It’s a spooky dream! “Supernatural” is a favorite of mine too – spooky without too much gore, esp. those first three seasons.

CFFD7BC0-C372-4B6F-BBD4-2B70981E8CAF

I’ve also taken on a challenge of watching horror movies from my friend Matt. He made me a starter list, and I’ve slowly worked my way through watching things like “Jaws” and “Psycho” for the first time. I’ve also re-watched a few on the list I’ve already seen…but only a few times…like the original “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th”.

and with streaming sites spewing out horrific good horror movies and series every month , do you think the horror movie genre has gotten too saturated?

I’m probably not the best person to commentate on that since I’m not a devout horror fan. But I’ll say this: as a music fan who can sometimes feel like there is too much out there, it can be overwhelming to wade through it all and find the things you love. I think that’s why it’s important to share your faves – and share WHY it’s your favorite! Lindsay from Foxblood recently talked me into watching a vampire flick called “Bliss”. I can’t wait to check it out!

Since we all know Halloween is LIFE , I know some of you use the love for the dark and spooky , to make some amazing crafts,

What arts and crafts do you make?

I don’t make nearly as much as I would like! I enjoy making things I can wear, like my over-the-top witches hat from a few years ago, or my spooky flower crowns I’ve been wearing a ton lately because…why not? As a girl, I loved making my own jewelry. I like having one-of-a-kind items to wear. I also try to keep an eye out these days for something I can give a little makeover to and make Halloweeny.

With Halloween becoming increasingly more popular for each passing year , what do you think is the positive and negative sides about Halloween becoming more popular every year?

I love seeing more people embrace Halloween. I know a lot of people dislike the trunk-or-treat concept because it cannibalizes trick-or-treating, which I get, but I also think the beauty of Halloween is…there is no wrong way to celebrate it. Whether it’s as simple as carving a jack-o-lantern for fun or as complex as hosting a huge party or event on October 31st, there’s no wrong way to be spooky!
Here in Norway , we rarely get any of the Halloween classics. I wouldn’t have gotten any of the candy Corns , Reeses , Herseys or any of the other goodies , if it wasn’t for my US Ghouls sending them to me.

What is your top 5 favourite Halloween candies, you must have , every Halloween?

Oh man, that’s hard! For nostalgia’s sake SweeTarts have to be on the list. I also love Almond Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Bats and Sour Patch Kids. And you can never go wrong with a good old Hershey bar.

14703682-A07C-42D8-83A7-7B19D7D8E00B

So ,trying to explain my Halloween addiction to a non-believer , is like trying to  convert a Yankees fan to the Sox , it´s impossible.

If you were to describe what is the most amazing part of  celebrating Halloween , what would you say?

The most amazing part of celebrating Halloween is the feeling it gives me. I never feel more like myself than when it’s September or October and I’m out at stores wandering the décor aisles or carving a jack-o-lantern in my kitchen or working on a costume idea. I feel complete and like I’m being my truest self when I’m enjoying the spooky season.

Halloween decorations are appearing earlier and earlier in the stores every year , making some of the stores making the decision NOT to restock in October, since they have should out most of the Halloween inventory by then , and rather focus on selling (Krampus save us all) Christmas decor .

What are your thoughts on Halloween decor not being available in October?

I feel like it’s a bit of a tradeoff. I’m always excited when Halloween décor shows up ridiculously early at stores, and a lot of the stores that do this are craft stores. People tend to shop for craft supplies well before the actual season because it takes time to make things! If that means October is a sparser on the Halloween décor, I get it. Honestly, by the time we get to mid-October anyway, I’m not going to stores as frequently because they are SO many other things to do.

That’s also why I’ve been making an effort to seek out more small businesses online to follow and shop with! I love that they do Halloween all year long for us spooky kids.

Halloween Queen Interview : Part 2- Halloween Homemaker !

Halloween Queens

LogoLicious_20200510_211214In today`s follow up interview , we catch up with the amazing Hazel AKA Halloween Homemaker!
If you have not read her earlier interview , you should definitely do that first and then come back here for the update! : https://norwegianhalloween.com/2018/04/02/halloween-queen-halloweenhomemaker/

******************************************************************
It’s been over 2 years since we last spoke!
What has changed in that time?

A lot has changed in two years. Some pretty outstanding things have happened with my account, including being featured on The Real, a nationwide daytime talk show, being interviewed by the NY Post after my trees went viral around the internet, and growth I never would have expected! On a personal level, it’s probably been the two hardest years of my adult life with a lot of loss and things that taught me some hard lessons. Through it, I have learned more about myself, allowed myself to reflect the person I am on the inside out, and taken a step back to reassess my priorities. A quote from the song Break the Shell by India.Arie has helped me through the dark times: shadows make you whole/
A life without pain is a wolf in sheep’s clothes/
Cause if you listen to the lessons that it holds/
You’ll find the gold.

People like to tell us, Halloween addiction is just a phase, and that we will grow out of it. Do you still love Halloween as strong now, as you did 2 years ago? Or has the magic dimmed?

I love Halloween because it has saved me at my darkest moments. It’s something that fills me with hope, gives me something to look forward to in order to keep going, shows me the beauty in endings and letting go, gives me space to be myself, and fills my heart with whimsical wonder. I will always love Halloween and find my way towards it for comfort. Sometimes the pressure I put on myself of sharing every bit of it online makes it less magical and more of a chore because things don’t feel as organic, I feel like I need to do more than I have time and energy to do, or that I can’t leave special things just for myself to enjoy in the moment because then I won’t be “enough” in the eyes of social media. I’ve had to give myself a break as the emotional toll of a complete breakdown in my world took hold. I barely made it through last Halloween season and it only got worse as the year ended. Thankfully I have found joy in creating holiday mashups for myself even if social media hasn’t seen all of it. 🎃💝🎄🎉

Halloween has gotten more and more popular these past few years. With popularity, comes opportunity. I cannot tell you how disappointing it is to see all my US ghouls not getting their annual favourite Halloween items solely due to anti-Halloween people raiding the stores in June, bulk buy the most highly sought after decorations, and then to go sell them for 4 times its value on Ebay.

Do you feel Halloween has lost its magic now that it has become “Popular”?

I think it becoming more popular is great because it creates more opportunities to experience and share the season. It’s okay that Halloween is just a holiday to most and a lifestyle for others. That doesn’t make it any less special to either group because it’s what we make of it ourselves, there’s enough to go around! To me that’s like saying your favorite band you loved before they were famous isn’t your favorite now that they’re loved by many. We can be happy to share things we love because it doesn’t take away the special place it holds in our hearts.

In terms of the merchandise online scalping, that’s something that happens with all sought after items unfortunately and the sellers are just opportunists. Price gouging reselling has even been seen on health items during this pandemic. It’s the sad affect of greed in a capitalistic society. Those scalpers wouldn’t be in business if people didn’t pay their prices, so the best way to combat that problem is to not buy from them. Fortunately, we can still create celebrations without all that stuff.

What is the best part of celebrating Halloween?

The best part for me is the autumn season. It’s very fleeting here between our hot and humid summers and 7 months long winters, so I appreciate those few weeks that the weather is perfectly between hot and cold, the trees give us a stellar show of color, and leaves crunch under foot with their sweet rotting aroma floating on a crisp breeze that foreshadows winter’s impending arrival.

We are all living in some quite stressful times these days, so the need to get spooky has now reached a point to were it’s crucial.
What do you do to get yourself in that spooky mood?

My bedroom is always Halloween Halloween and not seasonally updated Halloween, so if I need a Halloween hug, I just plug in my Halloween lights and turn on my Halloween playlist or watch one of my favorite movies/ shows.

LogoLicious_20191028_153245

October is still some months away, so the corona rules of social distancing will hopefully have been lifted by then. But in worst case scenario, some of us have started planning a virtual Halloween party where all the spooky ghouls and goblins would do a group video call and celebrate the best day of the year together from all around the world!

I don’t know if you have an annual Halloween party, but is a virtual Halloween party something you would do/attend?

I don’t have nor attend Halloween parties because I don’t actually know many people in real life and usually spend the holiday on vacation in my home away from home. I have mentioned on social media that I’d like to do a virtual party with my Halloween friends since I’m prepared for this to continue until there is a vaccine and my Halloweentown tradition is likely canceled this year for safety.

When I’m feeling down, I always re-watch my favourite Halloween/Horror movies.
Nothing removes stress more, than watching pumpkins getting carved, or a spooky story.
What movies/series do you watch to get your unholy spirit lifted?

My go to things to watch are 90s Halloween Disney Channel Original Movies like Halloweentown, Scream Team, and Don’t Look Under the Bed. I also watch Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps, the Munsters, and the Addams Family. Childhood nostalgia of the television that raised me is very comforting! I also love to rewatch Grimm for spooky Portland. If I’m in the mood for a theatrical release, then there’s nothing better than 80s horror comedy to feel good. Killer Klowns, Little Shop of Horrors, and Beetlejuice are my favorites! Currently, What We Do In the Shadows is the best TV time of my week!

With streaming sites spewing out horrific good horror movies and series every month, do you think the horror movie genre has gotten too saturated?

I think it’s great that there’s so much content being created in the genre. There are so many different kinds of horror out there and there seems to be something for everybody to enjoy. If you like it all, then it might get difficult to take it in all at once, but it’s also nice that there’s enough to savor over the long term.

Since we all know Halloween is LIFE,  I know some of you use the love for the dark and spooky, to make some amazing crafts.
What arts and crafts do you make?

I love making paper mache and incorporating trash to create sculptures like the venus flytrap I made for my September tree last year and the hot air balloon I created based on my favorite antique Halloween postcard for an entry into a contest held by the Order of the Thinned Veil. I also made most of the decorations for my Killer Klowns tree from August as well. I’ve always been a maker, so I just love to create things. I made a line of pillows based on vintage Halloween pails, complete with handles, which are for sale in my Etsy shop : https://www.etsy.com/shop/HalloweenHomemaker

LogoLicious_20180607_215614

With Halloween becoming increasingly more popular for each passing year, what do you think are the positive and negative sides about Halloween becoming more popular every year?

I think it’s mostly positive because it gives us more opportunities to experience and share in the season! The only negative side I can see would be lines at attractions and events and missing out on merchandise.

Here in Norway, we rarely get any of the Halloween classics. I wouldn’t have gotten any of the candy corns, Reeses, Hersheys, or any of the other goodies if it weren’t for my US ghouls sending them to me.

What are your top 5 favourite Halloween candies you must have every Halloween?

I don’t really like candy, so it’s not a must have for me. I do buy the crispy rice peanut butter cups by Unreal and last year I picked up a bunch of Halloween packaged candies from No Whey Chocolates. I still have those in my fridge because I just don’t eat it that often. I love Halloween Oreos and apple flavored fall foods. The apple cider jam from Trader Joe’s is my favorite!

So, trying to explain my Halloween addiction to a non-believer is like trying to convert a Yankees fan to the Sox, it’s impossible.
If you were to describe what is the most amazing part of celebrating Halloween, what would you say?

For me, my love for Halloween is very much connected to death. It was what lifted my spirits as I grieved nearly every major death that’s happened in my life. It’s very fitting to the holiday. I get to remember and celebrate my loved ones that have passed on with the magic that tingles through the air as the veil between worlds thins and becomes electric with wonder. I create a world of whimsy in my home that hugs me with an orange glow because each day should be a celebration since we never know when it will be our last. The world around us is saying goodbye in the most spectacular ways as darkness grows longer, trees let go, and much wildlife migrate or hibernate. It’s a last hurrah to celebrate the life we’ve lived before the dark descends and hope to see the shining of spring once again. It’s an offering of thanks to keep us safe in the time between. To carry that with me all year is to never forget to be grateful for the abundance of life and to always remain open to the unknown.

LogoLicious_20191003_231331

Halloween decorations are appearing earlier and earlier in the stores every year, making some of the stores making the decision NOT to restock in October, since they have should out most of the Halloween inventory by then, and rather focus on selling (Krampus save us all) Christmas decor.
What are your thoughts on Halloween decor not being available in October?

Historically, this is just the way retail works. I have a Halloween postcard from 1916, 104 years ago, that was dated in August, so it really hasn’t creeped into most stores earlier than that. Stores need to give their merchandise adequate time to sell down so that they aren’t left with tons of inventory that needs to be clearanced, resulting in profit loss. That means they replenish shelves as they sell down inventory on hand and many retailers get their entire stock in one to a few shipments with no opportunity to reorder. So it’s best to get what you know you’ll love forever right away and hold off if it’s something you think you can live without. Early bird gets the worm!

PhotoGrid_1589161809980

The same is true for Christmas. As someone who buys and decorates early for Halloween, I’m not here to judge anyone living their best Christmas life. I am not negative about Christmas, heck I decorate for it myself! I look forward to Christmas music and my vintage decorations, which rival my Halloween ones, even if I don’t share that online. My only criticism is when stores put out Christmas before a single Halloween decoration (usually in July 🤣) and I don’t hear nearly as many complaints about “too soon” for that as I do for Halloween stuff even in early September. To sum it up, let everyone live their lives with their own joy so long as it isn’t hurting anyone. If you don’t like it, don’t look at it and if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

spooky vegan Sarah Black Moon lip in Purgatory (5)

It’s been over 2 years since we last spoke! What has changed in that time?

Oh my goodness, I can’t believe it has been that long, it feels like we just chatted the other day! Besides living my best Halloween life, there has been one significant change in the past few years – I moved from Southern California to Seattle, Washington and got to finally experience a real autumn season! I’m loving the Pacific Northwest and can’t wait to explore it more once COVID-19 subsides and I am able to go out more. I didn’t get to do much during autumn last year, so I’m looking forward to checking out local haunts, events, and pumpkin patches here this year (as long as it is safe to!).

People like to tell us, Halloween Addiction is just a phaze, and that we will grow out of it. Do you still love Halloween as strong now, as you did 2 years ago? Or has the magic dimmed?

I have loved Halloween for so long now that my jack-o-lantern heart will always adore it! It is the one time of year I feel most alive and when others finally celebrate all the spookiness I love year-round! It is my season and I’ll never tire of its magic!

Halloween has gotten more and more popular these past few years. With popularity, comes opportunity. I cannot tell you how disappointing it is, to see all my US ghouls, not getting their annual, favourite Halloween items solely due to Anti-Halloween people raiding the stores in June to bulk buy the most highly sought after decorations for then to go sell them for 4 times its value on Ebay. Do you feel Halloween has lost its magic now that it has become “Popular”?

Sometimes I feel that Halloween is cheapened by the commercialism, but then again, its popularity is what makes spooky or Halloween products all the more available! And I think it also drives those that are passionate about Halloween to seek out other methods of honoring Halloween – like going back to the roots and celebrating the thinning of the veil.

What is the best part of celebrating Halloween?

The best part of Halloween is, of course, celebrating everything spooky! It’s a holiday dedicated to scaring and getting scared, so what could be better?! It is also the feeling in the air of something otherworldly and beyond our realm, the smell of burning leaves, the glow of crisp apples ripening in the fading sun, the sound of an eerie wind whistling through the graveyard, and the sight of a pumpkin patch under a full moon.

We are all living in some quite stressful times these days, so the need to get spooky has now reached a point to were its crucial. What do you do to get yourself in that spooky mood?

It’s important to me to surround myself with things I love, so you can imagine that I keep my home decorated for Halloween 24/7! To get myself in a spooky mood, all I need to do is turn on some of my Halloween lights, burn some Halloween candles (my current obsession is A to Z Candles Apple Cider Donuts scent!), turn on one of my Spotify Halloween playlists, and put on one of my many horror movies!

October is still some months away, so the Corona rules of social distancing will hopefully have been lifted by then. I don’t know if you have an annual Halloween party, but is a virtual Halloween party something you would do/attend?

Can you imagine how fun a virtual Halloween party with attendees from all over the globe would be?! I am so in if we are still under quarantine when Halloween comes around.

When I’m feeling down, I always rewatch my favourite Halloween/Horror movies. Nothing removes stress more than watching pumpkins getting carved or a spooky story. What movies/series do you watched to get your unholy spirit lifted?

Currently, I am loving season 2 of What We Do In The Shadows! It’s so hilarious and it’s perfect for when I just need something lighthearted (but still spooky) to watch. I also love re-watching my comfort horror movies, like Salem’s Lot, Scream, Final Destination, and more. I’ve also been keeping up with digital releases of new horror – I recently enjoyed Sea Fever and We Summon The Darkness!

And with streaming sites spewing out horrific good horror movies and series every month, do you think the horror movie genre has gotten too saturated?

We are in a true horror renaissance right now, with so much good horror coming out! I really can’t complain about that, though it is hard to keep up sometimes! I definitely have a big watchlist of upcoming horror on my LetterBoxd account (https://letterboxd.com/TheSpookyVegan )

spooky vegan 31 days of halloween movies (5)

With Halloween becoming increasingly more popular for each passing year, what do you think is the positive and negative sides about Halloween becoming more popular every year?

The positives are that everyone gets to celebrate all things spooky and that we get so much cool stuff and creations the more popular Halloween becomes. The downside is the tourists that don’t know the true meaning of Halloween!

Here in Norway we rarely get any of the Halloween classics. I wouldn’t have gotten any of the candy corn, Reeses, Herseys or any of the other goodies if it wasn’t for my US Ghouls sending them to me. What is your top 5 favourite Halloween candies you must have every Halloween?

My fave Halloween treats are actually not sweets – I love these potato chips shaped like bats and ghosts that come out every year, as well as mini pretzels shaped like jack-o-lanterns and bats! For candies, I love Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids (they have zombie ones for Halloween), and Cauldron Skittles (all of which are “accidentally vegan” here in the US). I also love Halloween Oreos (also accidentally vegan).

So trying to explain my Halloween addiction to a non-believer is like trying to convert a Yankees fan to the Sox, it´s impossible. If you were to describe what is the most amazing part of celebrating Halloween, what would you say?

The most amazing part of Halloween are the shivers that creep up on you during the season! It’s all about embracing the dark side and having fun with scary stuff!

Halloween decorations are appearing earlier and earlier in the stores every year, making some of the stores making the decision NOT to restock in October, since they have should out most of the Halloween inventory by then, and rather focus on selling (Krampus save us all) CHRISTMAS decor *Cringes*. What are your thoughts on Halloween decor not being available in October?

I think it is the nature of commercialism and isn’t really exclusive to Halloween, combined with the increasing popularity of the season. Of course, it still pisses me off when I see Christmas stuff on shelves in October (though I love Christmas, just not ‘til late November!)!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I’ve always loved Halloween, even as a child. I feel like in my adult years, I’ve
embraced it even more so to be able to tap into that feeling of mystical wonder I
felt about it as a kid. I’ve also always been a bit of a weirdo and into scary
things, ghost, folklore and mystery and Halloween is a night that celebrates it all.

How did you get into Halloween ?

Looking back, I blame Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas for my
obsession. When I first saw the movie, I was about 6 years old and I watched it
constantly. I would showcase my skills and knowledge of the movie by performing
the songs from it to my family members on a grassy knoll behind my grandma’s
house (I wish there were camera phones back then to capture that!). I also had
parents that made the holidays so much fun! We kept traditions such as carving
jack-o-lanterns, decorating the house, and trick-or-treating. Even as I got too old
for trick-or-treating, I distinctly remember my dad taking me to the video rental
store on Halloween night to help me pick out something scary to watch so I could
still feel the Halloween spirit (we picked out a Twilight Zone movie which was
pretty freaky).

What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween ?

I love Halloween crafts! That is one of the reasons why I started my blog,
Halloween Head. I noticed there was an amazing Halloween community online
who would embrace some of my silly DIY’s so I decided to go for it! But I love
watching scary movies, going to Halloween concerts, and throwing parties! I wish I
could to Salem every year on Halloween though (I went in 2017), and I encourage
everyone to go experience Salem on Halloween! It’s an absolute blast.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favorite one?

Oh yes! In 2001, I was Josie McCoy from the Josie and the Pussycats movie that
featured Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson ad Tara Reid. I felt like a total
rock star in my pink leather bell bottom pants, mesh leopard blouse and cat ears
and tail. To top of my look, I had my dad’s acoustic guitar (this was before I
learned how to play the guitar) strapped to my back as I went to door-to-door
seeking candy.
1

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween is a lifestyle that celebrates the odd and unusual, the unexplainable,
life and death, beginnings and ends, childhood wonder, a time to make and create
and of course, all things spooky. It means all of these things to me!

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your
favorite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

Can’t go wrong with chocolate and peanut butter – Reese’s will always be a
favorite. I also love Pay Day bars (thank goodness I’m not allergic to peanuts!).
What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?
I really enjoy baking and when Halloween comes around I love to bake with
pumpkin!

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I don’t think I ever really stop!

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

It’s also the only holiday with an emphasis on what you wear and self-expression
– and I love dressing up as a form of art!

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

It only comes once a year (so that’s why we need bloggers, YouTubers, and
content creators to keep the spirit alive all yes!)

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Definitely my beloved blow mold scarecrow I have inherited from my parents
named, Jack!

Do you still go trick or treating?

I’m a bit too old for that now (I do hope that one day I can take my fictional child
trick-or-treating and can vicariously live through them and show them how much
fun Halloween is!) – but I do love to hand out candy and toys for trick-or-treaters at
my house.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

I remember having to dress up as a fluffy bunny (my grandma made me my
costume) and I hated it. Not the best first Halloween memory, but I remember it!

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating
at a certain time ?

I officially pull out all of my Halloween decor totes on September 1 each year – but
I do keep several Halloween knick-knacks around the house all year long such as
my Johanna Parker mugs, some animal skulls and some fun signs and artwork.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I love to look for vintage and unusual items at flea markets, thrift stores and estate
sales.
But I also always check out At Home, Target, Wal-Mart, Old Time Pottery and
Kirklans every year!

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

I’d have to go with:
1. Hocus Pocus
2. Trick’r Treat
3. Rocky Horror Picture Show

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Halloween night was a big deal in my neighborhood growing up – everyone dressed up,
went trick—or-treating door to door, but lately it’s changed a lot.
It seems like most kids celebrate the event at church gatherings or carnivals and there
are less trick-or-treaters each year. I’ve also noticed less people decorate their homes for
the holiday which makes me sad.
For adults, we usually go to or host parties or go to haunted attractions or concerts!

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

I’m thankful that I’ve never had a difficult time finding decorations. I always wish
more stores kept them in stock year-round, but most stores begin stocking
items as soon as kids go back to school in the fall.

Blog
halloweenheadlogosmall.jpg
What made you want to start a Halloween themed Blog?

I kept seeing other great bloggers and content creators like you (Norwegian Halloween), Spooky Little Halloween, Halloween Happy and such and it inspired me. It looked like so much fun and I wanted to share my love of Halloween as another creative outlet. I tried other blog topics in the past, but this one took off because Halloween people are the best people!

How has the journey to get where you are today been?

It has been surprising! I started my blog in June of 2018 and really didn’t expect much of it. I thought, if people look at it great and if not it was worth a try! I really did not think I would gain any followers or make friends – but I have done exactly that! It’s been such a great experience to embrace the weird and spooky with other like minded folks.

What is important themes to when writing blog posts ?

I’m still a fairly new blogger (less than a year) and I’m still testing and learning what themes are important. I think it’s definitely important to add some sort of unique theme that special to you and I think fashion is mine because I love clothes – so visitors get a taste of spooky recipes, DIYs, stories and some outfit ideas!

2

How much time do you spend of your day/week writing /editing posts for your blog?

It has been different depending on the seasons. The months leading up to Halloween I was planning things in advance and drafting things for a few hours a week on my lunch breaks and on weekends. I’d say I spend 3 hours or so during the less busy times. I do hit ruts sometimes where I’m working to find inspiration and I’m trying to get better at planning a year in advance. I can’t wait to plan for my one year bloggiversary this year!

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?

H&M and Maurice’s are my favorite stores but I also love to shop at thrift stores
for unique finds!

5.jpeg

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

feel like my style for the day is based on my mood. Sometimes it’s moody and
edgy, sometimes it’s retro and bright. My closet is literally a sea of possibilties.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?

Some of my favorite Halloween shops online are Ghoul Babe (on Shop Envy),
Creepy Co. and Cavity Colors.

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

I always add a splash of spooky into an outfit every week. It might be in the
form of a creepy necklace or earrings or it’s my enamel buttons on a my coat.
The Halloween freak in me flies her flag all year!

Whats your favorite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc?

I love Halloween pins and jewelry! It’s something subtle that can be worn all
year and worn in various ways!

Have you worked hard on your style?

Not really – I’ve always loved clothes and fashion in general. I’ve definitely had
many phases of weird fashion I have been into throughout the years (don’t ask
me about my middle school punk-rock-spiked-collar-emo phase)…Style should
really be what makes you comfortable and feel good! And to each their own! I
really appreciate clothes and the many ways we can wear them and how
different we all are with how exactly we wear something. Your style is your art!

Emma is the Horror Queen from Down under!
She has a Youtube channel where she talks and reviews all the greatest horror movies to over 21000 + fans!

_____________________________________________________________________________________

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I’m a huge horror fan so I’ve always been interested in the idea of Halloween given it’s not really a thing in Australia.

How  did you  get into Halloween ?

From watching 90s horror films, they always show Halloween in such a glamorous way.

What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween ?

I try to watch 31 horror movies throughout October and of course carve a pumpkin!

4

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourite one?

Last year I dressed up as Jessie from Gerald’s Game (The movie) and Mike Flanagan started following me on twitter because of it!!! It was an awesome moment for me.

1
2.jpg

What does Halloween mean to you?

The night is very much the peak of all things spooky for the year, but for me horror is all year round. It’s nice that the rest of the world comes to the party at least once a year.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favorite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

To be honest, I think American candy is awful! It’s very different to what we have in Australia. I prefer Cadbury chocolate or something fun like nerds! Not sure if any of that counts as Halloween candy!

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

Pumpkin spice lattes, I am a basic white girl at the end of the day.

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I look for cool halloween costumes all year around, but I actually prefer doing some light cosplay with your own clothes. Like this one of me as Susie from Suspiria (2018)

3.jpg

What about  Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

Horror movies of course! And Horror movies being released around this time.

Do you think it has any  negative sides to it?

Not really, it’s not widely celebrated in my country so we don’t have any adverse side effects.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Possibly some of my horror movie soundtracks that are great to play around this time of year, but otherwise I don’t own any memorabilia.

Do you still go trick or treating?

Never have!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

Dressing up as an angel when I was ten-years old for a party.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

I try and get a few things around a week beforehand, but my filming room is always full of haunted items.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

Online mostly, otherwise at cheap dollar stores.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

Hocus Pocus is fun! Or A Nightmare Before Christmas!

How is Halloween celebrated  in Australia?

It isn’t really. It’s more used as a marketing tactic to get people to attend events, themed nights or parties.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

You can always find things in cheaper stores, but we don’t have any of the well made items you see online.

Spooky Astronauts
6.jpgWhat made you want to start making Youtube videos?

I am a professional videographer and I loved both Youtube and Horror so it made sense! I just posted a review not knowing really my intention and thought i’d give it a go for a few months. It ended up being the best hobby I ever started, and now has turned into a very small business!

How has the journey to get where you are today been?

I have been making videos for four years, but i’ve been obsessed with horror my whole life!

How much time do you spend of your day/week making videos?

The production and editing usually takes eight hours with two videos a week.
But the planning, scheduling, research and of course watching films to review takes anywhere between 10-30 hours a week!

What do you think is the Best And worst about making Horror related Youtube videos?

Best thing is communicating with like minded people. Worst thing is when people take opinions too personally, there’s a lot of hate online and it’s over things that really aren’t that serious.

What advice do you have to other spooky people who wants to start a Youtube channel ?

Just do it! Stop waiting for the right time, the right equipment and set up… start today! You can only improve!!!

Halloween Queen: The New England Ghoul!

Halloween Queens

Name: Amber

Age: 21

From : Massachusetts, USA

Amber is the amazing Ghoul behind the Instagram and blog: the new England Ghoul!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I think my love of Halloween stems from being born and raised in New England. Around here, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically and I have many special Halloween memories as a kid!

How did you get into Halloween ?

I’ve loved Halloween since childhood, but always felt silly wanting to celebrate it all year long. But once I found the Halloween community online it made me realize I wasn’t so crazy and there were other people out there who love it just as much as I do lol

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

I love going to haunted corn mazes, hayrides, or ghost tours on October nights…doesn’t get much spookier 🙂

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourite one?

I loved being a Witch for Halloween, I was one multiple years in a row. I was also the Grim Reaper one year….that costume was one of my faves!

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween season is when I feel I can truly be myself and express my love for dark & creepy things…and not be as judged for it lol Halloween is more than a holiday, it’s a lifestyle.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

I definitely love the classics! Reese’s and KitKats are my favorites.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

The candy for sure, but I also love when all of the apple & pumpkin flavored foods/drinks come out. Hot apple cider and a cider doughnut on a cold Autumn night is the best!

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I like to check my local stores around late August and early September. The week after Halloween is also a good time to check for clearance items for next year!

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

The whole Halloween season has an essence to it. The crisp October nights, the rustling leaves, the decorations, the haunted attractions, the Jack-o-Lanterns that line the streets here. It all contributes to what makes Halloween feel so spooky yet magical to me.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

It’s definitely not for everyone. I think too that some kids can be a little reckless and destructive on Halloween night, unfortunately.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

My favorite Halloween item I have is a light-up Jack-o-lantern that my grandma made, I showed it on Instagram and let people pick a name for him….his name is Irv 🙂

Do you still go trick or treating?

No, I don’t…if it was socially acceptable for a 21 year old to go trick or treating I definitely would though!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

I can remember Halloween as a kid vividly. On Halloween night I would go to my Aunt’s house in Connecticut to go trick or treating with my sister and cousins….the neighborhood was huge and some houses had haunts that you’d have to go through to get the candy!

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

I have certain things that I keep out all year, but some of my more special pieces I wait to put out on October 1st.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I get most of my decorations from Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s, and Home Goods/TJ Maxx

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

In terms of horror, I really love the classic “Halloween” series with Michael Myers. I also love the Disney movie “Halloweentown” for something more light-hearted.

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Halloween is celebrated with decorations of course, costume parties, haunted attractions, and trick-or-treating for the kids.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

Not usually, but it can get expensive. I usually wait for stores to have good sales.

Blog

What made you want to start a Halloween/horror/witch themed blog?

Honestly it was being inspired by other Halloween blogs I had discovered. It made me want to share my love for Halloween/spooky stuff too, but in my own way of course. I also wanted to showcase what Halloween season was like in New England!

What is important themes to you when you write posts?

Most of my posts have to do with haunted historical locations around New England, I try and make it so my readers can get a feel of what life was like for the people of that time period who resided in those places.

How much time do you spend of your day/week writing posts?

Unfortunately, I don’t have a set schedule right now. But a typical post can take me from anywhere between 2 days to a week depending on how long it is and how much time I can devote to it.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?

I don’t consider myself famous by any means! I’m just a girl who loves Halloween and a blogger who writes about it for fun 🙂

_____________________________

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?

I usually buy my clothes from Target, TJ Maxx, & Old Navy

What style of clothing do you like to buy?

I definitely have a more dark/sultry taste in clothing. Lots of black, (faux) leather, & lace.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us halloween addicts?

Definitely Etsy! There are so many amazing small shops that specialize in Halloween/Occult related clothing and accessories.

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

Not so much Horror related, but I do have some Halloween faves that I’ll wear all year.

Have you worked hard on your style?

Not really, though I do love shopping and putting outfits together!

Halloween Queen: Heathers House Of Horror!

Halloween Queens

Name: Heather Leanne

Age: 31

From : Baltimore, Md. US.

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I think more than anything it takes me back to being a kid again. I love that feeling of being scared. Like going through your first haunted house, not knowing what was gonna jump out and scare you next. It’s a thrill feeling really, a fun scared. And on top of that I love a Autumn season. Cool weather, pumpkins, the trees changing colors. It’s very comforting to me.

How did you get into Halloween ?

My mother really started my love for Halloween. It was a big deal growing up in my household. My mother has always and still to this day goes all out for Halloween. The most decorated house in the neighborhood. And even when the weather was too bad for us to trick ‘r treat she made sure that we at least had a Halloween party at the house for all of us kids. It’ll always be apart of our lives.

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

I absolutely love to give candy out to the kids. I love seeing them in their costumes and I love seeing the ones too scared to walk up to the house because all the creepy things in my yard. I even get some scares and jumps out of adult sometimes. My jumping spider does a good job at that. And on top of that I love carving pumpkins. I make sure to carve different ones every year.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favortite one?

That’s a tough one. I think my favorite thing is my werewolf mask. If I could be any monster, it would definitely be a werewolf. I unfortunately don’t have a favorite from my childhood or anything.

What does Halloween mean to you?

To me Halloween is a fun, comforting time of the year. That moment between summer and winter where I feel there’s this calmness, yet excitement all at the same time. It’s a holiday that everyone can take part in and enjoy the things it has to offer.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now a days , what is your favorite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

I love fun size Snickers and caramel apple lollipops. I miss Mr.Bones candy though. It was these candy skeleton pieces in a little plastic coffin box, and you could put him together like a puzzle. I loved that!

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I’m that basic girl who gets excited over pumpkin spice coffee. I’m a sucker for it. I’m also pretty excited to try making my own Harry Potter’s Butter Beer this year for Halloween night. That and candy apples.

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I buy Halloween items throughout the entire year. I’m a huge fan of vintage Halloween, like Beistle co. products. I’ll buy them randomly when I need a Halloween fix.

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

There’s nothing about Halloween that feels like an obligations. Everything about it I want to be involved in. It’s more freeing than any other.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

Not at all. When it comes down to it, it’s more about fun than anything. It’s all in good spirits.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

That would have to be my three headed Cerberus animatronic. I even made a dog house and all for him. Both kids and adults love it when I set him out.

Do you still go trick or treating?

Nope, I prefer giving the candy.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

My first memory would have to be from a time in Elementary school. We had gone around the block for our Halloween parade and all the kids were dressed in costume. And I remember the principle standing in the middle of the playground with a microphone, and she would call out all types of different kinds of costumes. So if she yell “do we have any witches here?”, all the little witches would go up as group so everyone could see. Then she’d yell for vampires, Batmen, clowns, etc. And every group had multiples. Well, except for me. She yelled “How about Catwomen?”, and there I was all by myself walking up there, the only Catwoman. I remember it was one of those cheap plastic costumes with the plastic mask. I think the reason it was so memorable was because of how shy I was as a child and it was almost mortifying to be in such spotlight.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

I always keep a Jack o’ Lantern up and a few things here and there. But, my birthday is in September so I always make it a point to decorate as a gift to myself since I love it so much. I’m usually the first with anything Halloween related up.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I love ‘Spirit Halloween‘, and Target has a great selection sometimes. I also shop EBAY for certain items.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

‘Trick r’ Treat’ has become a must when watching a movie. ‘Hocus Pocus’ of course, and I absolutely love ‘The Simpsons: Tree House of Horrors’.

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Trick r’ Treating for the little of course, and haunted hay rides are really fun. Unfortunately it seems to be losing people here. In my neck of the woods anyway. I wish I had more neighbors who celebrate and decorate, but its less and less every year it seems. I keep telling myself to found that Halloween town. That town out there somewhere where it’s a big deal. I want that neighbor who would compete with me. Fight for ‘Who’s got the scariest yard?’. I’m afraid the kids will eventually stop coming around.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

No really, we usually have a ‘Spirit Halloween‘ open up near by. And I’m not far at all from shopping centers.

__

ArtByHeatherLeanne

What made you want to start designing and selling Halloween themed items?

I started a few years ago while I was still working full time. I’m fortunate enough now to have a bit more time to create and paint more often. I love painting, it’s the one thing that feels the most natural to me. Even as a kid I was drawing up creepy cemeteries and witches. I enjoy being able to offer different items that you don’t see too often and with Halloween usually anything Horror/Scary movie is related, and that’s a genre that’s not really mainstream. There’s a community, but you could go through your entire day without bumping into someone you can relate to. I just love be able to offer that little bit of Halloween love all year round.

What is important themes to you when you design?

I love characters and their intricate details. When I decide to paint a new monster that I haven’t done before it really makes me appreciate the FX and art that went into it. I try and do my best to add those details, even if they’re subtle and you can hardly tell they’re there.

How much time do you spend of your day/week on making your items?

Depends on my work schedule. I could go days without painting, but when I do get days off I’m sitting down for hours trying to get things done. I wish I could treat like a work schedule, but I catch myself balancing out everything that needs my attention. And really I have to be in a good mental state to paint. If my mind is wondering I can’t give my work what it deserves and what my customers deserve. And I believe they deserve quality.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween designer?

I wouldn’t call it fame, I’m still really trying to build a good customer base. I do my best to be professional and respectful to everyone though. And everyone who meets me in person seems to like me. I’ll vend horror conventions sometimes and I get to meet a few of my existing customers and new ones as well. And it’s always a great experience. The horror/Halloweencommunity has a lot of really great people.

_____________________________________________________________

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?

I’ll shop anywhere from thrift stores to big name retail stores. I’m not particular unless it’s for pants. I’m super short and that’s always so difficult to shop for.

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

I love wearing dresses, but most days I’ll throw on a t-shirt and jeans. I end up getting paint on everything anyway. So, I never get fancy.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?

Get creative. Hit up your local thrift stores. You’d be surprised what you’d find and what you could make out of it.

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

I have a few horror tees I love wearing all year round. I’m a huge ‘True Blood’ fan, and I always have some sort of ‘True Blood’ related shirt on during the week.

Whats your favorite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc?

I love Halloween socks. I’m always wearing some type of socks with Jack o’ lanterns on them.

Have you worked hard on your style?

Not really, I’m pretty laid back and it doesn’t take much effort.

How did you get into Halloween?

Gosh it started when I was a little girl. I just loved the idea of being whoever you wanted for one night and I just loved the idea of ghost, goblins and all that fun stuff!

What is your favorite thing to do on/around Halloween?

Since giving birth to my daughter back in 2014, my husband and I have made it a tradition every October to go to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (We live 15 minutes away) and walk the beautiful grounds there. Our first stop on our stroll is Washington Irving’s grave to pay our respects to my absolutely favorite Halloween tale author, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favorite one?

I have a lot, but I would have to say my favorite one would have to be last years costume when I dressed up as Lydia Deetz!

What does Halloween mean to you?

Being able to feel normal for a night lol

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I only buy Oreos around Halloween because I am convinced that orange filling tastes better than the regular white filling lol

YES! Its been awesome the last few years taking my daughter trick or treating in my childhood neighborhood cause it means I can dress up too without being looked at strangely lol

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

Probably one of my favorite memories of Halloween when I was younger, would be decorating outside of my house. I remember one day deciding I was going to build a hangmans noose. I went into my father workshop, helped myself to wood, nails, and a hammer and started building. I’m sure when my dad was quite concerned when he found what I was doing when he got home from work lol

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time?

Iam really into witches, so there are a few witch decorations that I keep out all year long.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

I would have to say Hocus Pocus. Even though I’ve seen it 500 times its always amazing as seeing it for the first time!

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

By going to the Halloween capital of course, SALEM, MA! My absolute place in the world!

Verona Black Designs

What made you want to start designing and selling Halloween themed items?

As you can see, I’ve always been quite Halloween obsessed. When I started this business 13 years ago, it was a completely different feel. I was making things that were much more conservative for me by trying to make a product that would appeal to people in my area. As the years went on, my brand evolved and I eventually I became more comfortable in making what I was into and not caring if people in my area liked it or not. I am so much happier making and designing that with a darker side =]

How much time do you spend of your day/week on making your items?

Not enough lol I am currently a stay at home mom, while trying to run my little business. My husband does not have a normal work schedule, so whenever he is not working he is on daughter duty. I try to get in at least an hour and a half a day and when my daughter takes a nap and goes to sleep for the night.
