What made you love Halloween so strongly?

It started simple enough; free candy plus getting to don a costume every October. I think I’ve always loved dressing up more than most. As I got older I realized candy or not I truly loved Halloween more than any other time of year.

How did you get into Halloween ?

I noticed myself getting more excited for it every year & would always think about it during the rest of year. I also noticed myself becoming more interested in costumes.

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

I love getting dressed up & going to the pumpkin patch & picking the perfect pumpkin. I also love shopping around for Halloween goodies. I can’t forget exploring the Disneyland resort & the Mickey Pumpkin!

Screenshot_20180528-161938_Instagram

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourtite one?

The first year I attended Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party at Disneyland I finally got to make an Oogie Boogie costume. It came out awesome & everybody loved it!

What does Halloween mean to you?

Everything. It just makes me happy. It’s the one time of year when I can truly be myself without the negativity & confusion from others.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

I’ll always have a special place in my heart for candy corn & Reese’s pumpkins. But I’m a total sweet tooth so I pretty much love all Halloween sweets.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

Everything! Pumpkin delights are my absolute favorite seasonal food. In fact I’ve got two boxes of them in my freezer to tide me over until September.

Screenshot_20180528-193905_Instagram.jpg

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I never stop shopping for Halloween. I happen to find myself constantly searching for Halloween items.

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

I was born in the fall so I’ve always had an affinity for that time of year. I love the traditions whether they’re silly or truly special. The smell in the air. The changes in nature.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

Some people have negative connotations towards Halloween for some reason. The Halloween season isn’t long enough either.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

It’s actually something I don’t own it yet. My mom has this ceramic jack o lantern & it lights up. It’s from before I was born & has always been my favorite Halloween decoration. Last Halloween she told me one day she would pass it down to me.

Do you still go trick or treating?

Actually yes. During the Halloween party at Disneyland they have treat trails set up & I love getting to feel like a kid again & actually trick or treat!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

I remember being dressed as a little devil, walking through my childhood neighborhood crunching leaves as I collected candy.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

Up until this year I had a few items that I used to store during the non Halloween months, but I’ve decided to leave it up all year long. The decor in my kitchen & bathroom is mostly Halloween too.

Screenshot_20180528-194412_Instagram.jpg

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I have this keen ability to find Halloween items everywhere! I prefer to buy from the small shops who make Halloween items year round & through thrifting.

Screenshot_20180528-194006_Instagram.jpg

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

Halloween, HalloweenTown, The Simpson’s treehouse of horror, Hocus Pocus, & I’m sure I’m forgetting like 10 other things.

Screenshot_20180528-194251_Instagram.jpg

How is Halloween celebrated where you live?

Yes, living in Southern California there’s Halloween stuff pretty much everywhere during September & October.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

It’s not hard to find decorations but I really like to make my own decor!

What made you want to start a horror/Halloween themed Instagram?

Halloween/Horror is life.

What is important themes to you when you post pictures?

I went to school for photography so I get really picky about photos. Background is always important to me along with the composition & the little details. I have a tendency to get a little carried away.

How much time do you spend of your day/week on Instagram?

Haha way more time than I should.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?

I wouldn’t really associate myself with having any fame. I just love being in a position to find others who share my way of life.

Of course! I collect Halloween accessories so I can add some Halloween cheer to any outfit.

The Halloween Disneyland hoodie from last season. Michael Myers Halloween sweater from Middle of Beyond. The orange pumpkin bag I won last year from love, pain, & stitches.

Halloween Queen: Battywampus!

Halloween Queens

What made you love Halloween so strongly?
There’s nothing more exciting to me than seeing magic, real magic, come alive in the eyes of strangers. No other day of the year captures the same magic that Halloween has. Months of preparation culminate on a single night where both adults and children alike get to be someone else for an evening and celebrate Halloween in their own unique way.
How did you get into Halloween?
I started working at Spirit Halloween, a large Halloween retailer, when I was 19-years-old and I didn’t have many positive influences in my life at the time. My store manager is a very kind and generous person who didn’t just work for a Halloween company, he genuinely LOVES Halloween. He had this severed leg prop that he would hang from the trunk of his car and people driving on the road would call the police because they thought he had a real dead body in his trunk! His stories about his years of experience with the Halloween industry and passion for Halloween are part of the reason I fell in love with Halloween and I’ve found new reasons to continue loving it ever since.

What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween?
I’m almost 30-years-old and I still go trick-or-treating. It’s less about getting candy and more about the thrill of the next house. There’s nothing more exhilarating and rewarding than coming home after spending three hours walking around dressed up like a ghost while carrying a 4 pound pillow case full of candy. I host Halloween parties around Halloween but I never host parties on Halloween night. I am also pagan and Samhain is a sacred day for me so I usually spend the day creating my Samhain altar and prepping my feastbefore I go trick-or-treating.
Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favorite one?
Three years ago my friends and I dressed up as ghosts. We bought white bed sheets from the thrift store and cut eye holes out with scissors. One of my friends went as the Charlie Brown ghost, complete with a rock! People were so excited to see us and we got a lot of compliments that year. Many adults that were handing out candy told us stories of how they dressed up as bed sheet ghosts when they were younger. I definitely think those costumes contributed to us getting more candy that year.
What does Halloween mean to you?
Magic. Community. A sense of belonging. In the off season people think I’m weird and I get comments on how strange it is that I like Halloween all year long. As soon as Halloween comes along, I’m the cool one. I enjoy Halloween because weird is the new normal. People judge less and interact with their communities more.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )
What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?
When do you start shopping for Halloween?
I’m usually scouting stores mid-July but stores are posting their Halloween inventory online earlier every year. Michael’s is almost always the first store in the US to start selling Halloween home decor but even Hobby Lobby is putting out fall items now and it’s not even the middle of May yet.

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?
History tells us that in the beginning, Halloween was a night to go out into town and make mischief. Be someone you don’t normally get to be. Be obnoxious. Raise hell! It may not be celebrated today in the same way that it used to be, but we still use it as a night to accept things that we wouldn’t normally accept any other night of the year. We are more willing to accept that ghosts, witches and magic are possible on Halloween. Death is normally very difficult to talk about the rest of the year, but for one night we don’t just acknowledge it- we idolize it! We wear costumes of dead people, re-animated corpses, serial killers and even death itself. I love that we can accept the unacceptable one night a year.
Do you think it has any negative sides to it?
Halloween as a gore-fest has never really been my cup of tea but I understand why people love it. It’s a day for expression and possibilities! At it’s heart I believe that Halloween is about acceptance but I think some people use Halloween as an excuse to push boundaries, be dangerous, make people feel uncomfortable and unsafe on purpose. One year I was trick-or-treating with my friends and two adults dressed as murderous clowns started following us. They followed us for several blocks in an attempt to make us feel uncomfortable on purpose. We asked them to stop but they didn’t listen and in the end it ruined the evening for us. Not everyone wants to be scared on Halloween.
What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?
A few years ago I asked my grandfather to build a pair of coffin shaped bookshelves for me. Not only are they awesome pieces but they are mementos that I get to keep after he’s gone. We painted them together so those memories are something I will always cherish.

Do you still go trick or treating?
Absolutely. Last year I went with my fiance’s younger siblings but I usually go with friends. I’ve found that I am never asked about my age if I dress up in a costume that covers my whole body. I tested this theory some years ago when I wore a costume that showed my face and I got significantly less candy than previous years when my whole body was covered. The fact that you’re supposed to stop because you’re too old once you hit an arbitrary age confuses me. The age range you’re supposed to stop trick-or-treating varies between 10-14 but there’s no clear explanation for why you have to stop other than “you’re too old.” It feels unfair to have this ritual of going trick-or-treating for the first 14 years of your life then suddenly you’re not allowed to do it anymore. I am an advocate for trick-or-treating as an adult but if someone wants to sit at home handing out candy, be my guest! I couldn’t have the trick-or-treat experience without them. I just think it should be a choice instead of being enforced based on an arbitrary obligation.
Can you remember your first Halloween memory?
I was 5-years-old and my mom made Halloween costumes for my brother and I. She made me a pink power ranger costume out of a matching pink sweater and sweatpants with cut out pieces of felt. At the time I was so mad because I wanted her to buy me a costume from the store but now I think back to how cool it was to have something handmade like that. I’m glad she made it for me instead!
Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?
I keep some things out all year. My coffin book shelves are hard to hide away and kitchen stuff like dishes, cookie jars, pot holders and utensils are out all year because I use them every day but my hanging items, window clings and specialty items are put away until usually August.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?
Target, Kohl’s, Tuesday Morning, Daiso, Ross, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics, Michael’s, At Home, Kirklands, TJ Maxx / Home Goods and Thrift stores
Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?
Disney’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (1949)
How is Halloween celebrated in the US?
It depends on where you are in the US. In Minnesota there’s been a big push in the last several years for more elaborate yard decorations and sometimes you’ll see animated screen projections on the sides of houses. I frequently see people driving around neighborhoods to look at all of the decorations, much like people do with Christmas lights in the winter.Costume parties are still popular in the US for both kids and adults. Some parents try to get their kids to stay in on Halloween by inviting their children’s friends over to have costume parties instead of going out trick-or-treating. The number of kids going trick-or-treating has been decreasing steadily over the years as adults try to confine festivities to smaller and more controlled areas like schools and libraries. A lot of large malls actually have events where kids can walk around to different stores and get candy from people waiting at the doors. It always seems so cold and calculated though and I don’t like it.
Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?
No. I live in a fairly large city so many of the stores that I shop at are within driving distance. There are roughly four different TJ Maxx/Home Goods, Targets and Michael’s stores within a 15 mile radius of my home.

Blog

What made you want to start a horror/Halloween themed blog?
I was an assistant store manager at Spirit Halloween in 2016 and decided to chronicle my time there. I didn’t have a clear idea in my head at the time for a blog but I found a community that I enjoyed sharing my experiences with on Tumblr. It wasn’t until I switched to Instagram as my full-time social media platform that I dove head first into blogging. It was the community that gave me the motivation to start and I just really wanted to share my Halloween finds with everyone.
What is important themes to you when you write posts?
I want to make sure people have a good understanding of the subject I’m writing about. Whether it be about drinks, style, shopping or events. Where did I get it? How much was it? Is it still available? How can you make what I just made? I want you to know all of that! I’m not just keeping it to myself. I want to share it.

How much time do you spend of your day/week writing posts?
Not enough. I think I probably spend 2-4 days writing blog posts per month. I really have to sit down and focus on a post and that can be difficult for me with my full-time job and chronic pain. I have carpal tunnel syndrome and a bulging neck disk. Sitting at a computer for any significant length of time can be strenuous on my body.
Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?
I don’t think I’m famous at all. When I start collaborating at big events like Midsummer Scream maybe then I’ll start to feel like I am!

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes?
95% thrift stores. I currently work at Goodwill and I previously worked at Savers, both nationwide thrift store chains. I have been shopping at thrift stores since I was a kid and I think its important to know the value of a good second hand item.
what style of clothing do you like to buy?
I tend to stick to black and gray. Faux leather, lace and buckles are aplenty in my wardrobe but I also like warm neutral colors like green, brown and cream. I am obsessed with linen and I have a lot of linen dresses and shirts in my closet. “Mori Girl” is my second favorite style but I rarely dress in it.
Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?
I shop everywhere. Don’t assume a place won’t have what you’re interested in. There’s always something to find even if you don’t think there is. www.spirithalloween.com and www.partycity.comdon’t just sell costumes they also sell build-your-own pieces which include sweaters, tights, shoes, etc.
www.poshmark.com is like an online thrift store. Just search “Halloween” and see what you can find.
Seriously just check out my Halloween Fashion Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/Battywampus/halloween-fashion/
Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?
Actually, no. I dislike being stopped and asked about it all the time. Once in a while I’ll feel particularly spooky and I’ll deck myself out in bats but I generally pick up my Halloween/Horror style around August or September when the weather gets cooler. It works for me because most of the Halloween clothes that I own are sweaters and warmer clothes anyway.

Whats your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc?
My Love Pain and Stitches Jack O’ Lantern bags are definitely my favorite bags, I enjoy boots with buckles and find a lot of cool ones at thrift stores, but my favorite Halloween clothing item is this shoulder cut out sweater with a Jack O’ Lantern face on it that I purchased from Spirit Halloween last year. (https://www.spirithalloween.com/product/cold-shoulder-pumpkin-sweatshirt/150471.uts?keyword=cold%20shoulder&thumbnailIndex=1&Search=Find+It)

Have you worked hard on your style?
Oh goodness, yes! If I’m going out with friends I spend a long time changing in and out of clothes before I finally decide on what I’m going to wear. Sometimes I even pick out my clothes the night before only to change my mind at the last minute the next day. I wear a uniform at work so it’s a release for me to be able to pick something out that I actually want to wear. Though if I’m by myself at home lounging around and watching TV, I like to put in as little effort as possible. Messy bun and re-runs is my motto!

Halloween Queens

Age: 36
From: Southern California

Sarah is the amazing Ghoul behind the blog and Instagram: The Spooky Vegan!

—————————————————–

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I’ve always loved scary things, and I love how Halloween has developed into a holiday that celebrates all things spooky!

How did you get into Halloween?

I think it has always been in my bones, especially since I started reading horror novels and watching horror movies at a young age. Halloween is an extension of that, a time when I can share my love of spooky things with others.

What are your favorite things to do on/around Halloween?

I love visiting pumpkin patches, shopping for Halloween décor (which basically becomes my house décor year-round), going to haunts like Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios and checking out other haunted attractions, carving pumpkins, watching Halloween-themed horror movies, and eating pumpkin spice everything!

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favorite one?

Yes! When I was around 6 or 7 my mom made me a witch costume and bought me a little broom to go with it. I loved that costume so much! My mom put so much time and love into it too, so it made it all the more special.

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween is a lifestyle and I embody it every day! I love that Halloween means celebrating everything that is spooky and embracing it all with childhood glee! It is a fun, joyful celebration of everything I love. To me, Halloween is a comforting time of year – it feels like being wrapped up in a cozy blanket while telling ghost stories in front of a roaring fire while the darkness presses in around you. Halloween feels like home and a time I can completely be my spooky self.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get nowadays, what is your favorite? (Old Classics/New style candy etc.)

There are lots of vegan candy options out there, but I love the Sour Patch Zombie Kids!

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

Pretty much everything and anything pumpkin flavored! I love the non-dairy pumpkin spice lattes (made with coconut milk) from Peet’s Coffee. I also love baking up pumpkin bread and treats! I especially adore my recipe for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies (check it out here: https://www.thespookyvegan.com/2013/10/31-days-of-halloween-vegan-pumpkin.html)!

When do you start shopping for Halloween?

When do I stop?! I keep searching for Halloween items all year-round, but generally try to curb my spending so I can go crazy when Halloween items start hitting shelves in July, August, September and October! In July and August you can find me stalking the shelves of my local Michael’s, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, and Target stores for Halloween goodies.

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

It encompasses everything I love. I love the cozy feel of autumn (though here in Southern California it is usually still hot this time of year), and the general atmosphere of the veil getting thinner around Halloween, allowing imaginations to run wild and honoring the dark side of life.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

Yes, that it doesn’t last longer!

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Hmmmm, I’m not sure I have just one but I am fond of the Halloween-themed artwork I’ve started collecting the last few years. I’m not one for sprawling collections of Halloween items that will just sit in boxes or collect dust, so I’ve tried to minimize my spending on Halloween things (though I do love shopping for home décor during Halloween season and always pick up a lot of lovely items) and instead focus on the special feeling Halloween brings.

Do you still go trick or treating?

No, but I do hand out candy to trick or treaters. Halloween is about the only time of year I can actually stand kids!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

My earliest Halloween memory is probably when my parents took me to a pumpkin patch. I remember running around and hiding in a teepee that was set up in the pumpkin patch. I also remember having Halloween parades at school, where everyone was dressed up and each class paraded around the schoolyard.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time?

I do keep most of my Halloween décor up year-round, but in late August or early September I pull out the rest of my Halloween decorations and put them up.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

Online, at conventions or Halloween festivals, or at stores like Michael’s, Homegoods, Target, and so on.

What is your favorite Halloween movie/series?

Trick ‘r Treat followed closely by Hocus Pocus!

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Halloween is usually celebrated in the United States with dressing up in costumes and attending costume parties, going to pumpkin patches, trick or treating for kids or handing out candy if you’re an adult, attending haunt attractions, and celebrating everything spooky with scary stories, movies, music, and food!

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

Not at all! We have multiple year-round Halloween stores in addition to seasonal Halloween stores, not to mention that all stores here have some Halloween-themed products when September and October roll around.

Blogging

What made you want to start a Halloween blog?

I used to run a horror movie site, and when that was finished I wanted my own space to write about everything and anything I wanted, including Halloween! I adore Halloween so much and I wanted to share that love with others.

What is important themes to you when you write posts?

I only write what I want, and that basically boils down to anything Halloween, horror, or vegan-related!

How much time do you spend of your day/week writing posts?

It varies depending on the time of year, but usually I try to spend one day a week planning or writing posts. I’ve been a bit lax with this schedule this year, though, but with new Halloween events on the horizon (there is always something Halloween-related happening here in SoCal!), I’m looking forward to focusing more on writing new posts.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween blogger?

I don’t consider myself famous by any means, so it is always unexpectedly delightful when someone recognizes me in real life! I love meeting fellow spookies!

Clothing/Style

Where do you usually buy your clothes?

I’m not much of a clothes shopper, so I usually get my clothes from online shops as well as in-stores.

What style of clothing do you like to buy?

Anything and everything black, bonus points if it is gothic or witchy style. I love everything with bats!

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?

I love the horror movie tees that Cavity Colors (https://cavitycolors.com/) has been putting out, and there are lots of other great indie companies making fun Halloween tees. I also love perusing Sourpuss Clothing, as well as indie companies like Drklght Clothing (http://www.drklght.com/), SophiReaptress (http://www.sophireaptress.com/), and so many more I usually discover at Halloween and horror conventions.

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

Yes, though my style is more minimalist goth than anything else – I’m my go-to outfit is black skinny jeans, black canvas shoes, a black top, and a witchy, flowy wrap accessorized with a Halloween necklace and a skull-covered purse.

What are your favorite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc.?

I love accessorizing with Halloween and horror jewelry – I have lots of spooky pendants and Halloween necklaces I’ve picked up at Halloween conventions and events. I also adore Halloween bags – I have ones shaped like bats, pumpkins, and decorated with skulls, coffins, and haunted houses! Since I wear a lot of black, I like wearing jewelry and using handbags that standout! When temperatures are cooler, I also love wearing Halloween scarves; my favorite is a pumpkin orange one with black bats.

Have you worked hard on your style?

I’ve gotten lazier as I’ve gotten older, and now ease and comfort is more important to me than style! Again, I do love incorporating little Halloween and horror flourishes into my outfits, though. Even my workout gear has a touch of spookiness to it!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

Halloween is the one thing that has always been able to put a smile on my face, regardless of what else is going on. The feeling that Halloween gives me is so strong that it can cure anything that ails me. I love everything about Halloween, it just makes me feel like myself.

How did you get into Halloween ?

I have always been into Halloween, it has always been my favorite holiday. However, when I was about 12 or 13 years old, I was trick or treating on a crisp Halloween night, happier than I ever had been, and I said to myself “I don’t want this night to ever end.” And from that point on, everyday was Halloween for me J

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

I love shopping for new Halloween décor, especially now that I have my own place to decorate. Decorating the bathroom is one of my favorite places to decorate, believe it or not. I can’t wait to have a house one day and create my own haunted house that all of the trick-or-treaters can come to on and around Halloween night. I love to dress up as well, it is always a long process to decide what I want to be each year, but looking through all of my costume options gives me such excitement. Everything Halloween related is my favorite honestly lol, picking pumpkins, carving pumpkins, going to Fall festivals, handing out candy on Halloween night, watching scary movies, going to haunted attractions, ghost walks. I love it all, and I just can’t get enough of Halloween!!

Can you remeber which Halloween costume was your favourtite one?

One year I was “Frankie’s Girl,” which is basically the bride of Frankenstein, but for preteens. I loved this costume so much because it was the first time I was really able to pick out a costume I loved and my mom bought it for me. Before that, she always wanted me to be something like a princess or something “pretty,” while I always wanted to go the more gruesome route. My Frankie’s Girl costume was so spooky looking, I had a long white dress that was torn and dirty, as if I had been crawling out of a grave, and I had an awesome tall black and white wig. My mom even let me put on spooky makeup, I was truly in Halloween heaven that year.

What does Halloween mean to you?

To me, Halloween means that you can be anything you want, and not just for one night, but for the whole Halloween season (which is all year for me lol). Not only can you dress up, but you can create a world that is different than the one you’re living. You can essentially live in a haunted house, drive a haunted car, or even be a ghost. Halloween gives you the ability to be anything you want to be, and for us spooky people, nothing means more than that.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

What a hard question! I am a candy fanatic, especially when it has a Halloween wrapper on it. But I’d have to say that my absolute favorite is orange Halloween Kit Kats. They are so tasty, and the orange makes it even better. I also love Reese’s cups and Take 5 bars a lot. When I was a kid trick-or-treating in my Nana’s neighborhood, there was a house that always gave out Juice boxes, and I remember loving that so much. After hours of trick-or-treating, you could finally have a nice tasty drink. I also had a neighbor who handed out Halloween shaped pretzels, those were exciting to get too. I like to pack full treat bags of Halloween goodies for the trick-or-treaters. I fill the bags with candy (of course), and other Halloween goodies that I usually buy from Party City. It is so worth it to see the huge smile on a kid’s face when they see that they are getting much more than just one piece of candy.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I love to make new Halloween recipes every year, but my go to recipes are Halloween cookies/cupcakes, and some sort of spooky punch or cider drink!

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

As soon as the stores have something!! So usually around May. However, I am lucky enough to have some stores near me that carry Halloween items all year long, so I’m always shopping!

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

Absolutely everything, the holiday itself is so great, even if I had no money, I could still fully enjoy the Halloween season.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

NOPE!

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Wow that’s another tough one, I’d have to say it’s my Wolfman animatronic, which is the first one I have ever owned.

Do you still go trick or treating?

Yes and no. I don’t go out asking for candy usually, but I do go out on a nice walk through a heavily decorated neighborhood on Halloween night with my man, which almost feels like trick-or-treating J

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

My very first Halloween memory was when I was probably 4 or 5 years old. My elementary school always had a Halloween parade every year. All of the kids from all grades would dress up and parade around the school, it was so much fun! My first parade was in kindergarten, and I was a pink Power Ranger

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

Out all year!!

Halloween with Michael Myers of course! I also love the Halloweentown movies, Trick ‘R Treat, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and anything Halloween related!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

It’s hard to pinpoint the source of what made me love Halloween so strongly. There’s something about the decorating, dressing up, and Halloween crafts! I love all of it! Especially handing out candy to kiddos.

How did you get into Halloween ?

When I was younger I played dress up all the time, so being able to dress up and getting candy late at night made younger me love the holiday! Then eventually I liked other aspects of Halloween.

What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween ?

Here in Texas, we have a lot of pumpkin patches and corn mazes. That is definitely the thing to do in October! There are no festivals or parades for Halloween sadly.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favorite one?

My favorite Halloween costume would have to be the year I dressed as I pirate with my husband. That was our first Halloween together, and I got to match costumes with my soul mate.

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween is a night of being goofy or scary, and just plain fun! And now that I am becoming a Wiccan, Halloween/Samhain will have even more meaning to me.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

Oh boy. I used to like all the chocolate candy bars or sometimes if you’re lucky you will come across a house that makes their own candy (which is the best)! But now i prefer the sour candies like airheads, sourpatch kids, or lollipops. Too much chocolate for me gives me a bad tummyache, sadly.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I am mainly excited about Halloween drinks. I love the creative alcoholic drinks that you can find on Pinterest for Halloween. They look so pretty! For the food, I haven’t come across anything that I wanted to make but I am open to suggestions!

When do you start shopping for Halloween?

I try to start as soon as the shop starts putting items out. In Texas, Halloween isn’t as important as Christmas so most shops usually wait until October put things out (which is really annoying). But I will buy as much as I can, and then after everything is discounted I will buy more! But I usually wait for the most expensive stores to discount their items. I usually buy from dollar tree for most of my needs!

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

The overall spirit of Halloween makes it my favorite. The general sense of excitement and silliness makes it the best holiday ever!

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

In my opinion, I don’t think Halloween has anything negative sides to it. I know there’s a lot of religious people who don’t celebrate or believe that Halloween should be allowed. Living in the Bible Belt taught me that. But someone else’s religion is not my problem. You worship who you want and celebrate what you want as long as it doesn’t hurt others. And I will continue to celebrate Halloween!

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

My mixing bowl/ Popcorn bowl/ candy bowl! I use that thing all year round for just about everything in the kitchen. It has a cute little owl on it.

Do you still go trick or treating?

I take my brother almost every year but I personally don’t ask for candy. I usually buy a lot of candy to hand out to trick r treaters after I take my brother out to trick r treat.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

Oh, my goodness yes. I remember I was a popcorn box for Halloween and my dad scared the crap out of me with a werewolf mask.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time?

I will decorate early September, and put up decorations two weeks before Christmas. Last year I simply hung up all my decorations in my office!

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I usually buy from Dollar Tree because you can never overspend in that store! Plus I always buy more than what I intend to buy.

Whats your favorite Halloween movie/series?

My favorite Halloween Movie is Scream. That was one of the first horror movies I watched when I was little, and I have been in love with the movie franchise since. I also really like the Scream series. I recommend that to anyone that isn’t squimmish.

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Traditionally, you would dress up and go door to door saying ” Trick or treat”, and then get candy. One time a kid came up to me, said ” Trick or Treat”. And I told him ” Trick”. He just stood there not knowing what to say or do. So I gave him candy lol.

*******INSTAGRAM*********

What made you want to start a Halloween related Instagram?

Honestly, i wanted to dedicate a page on Halloween because that is all I ever followed on my private account. So I made a Halloween account that I liked, and eventually, people started to follow. Which kinda shocked me, and I felt so grateful that I did giveaways! Now here I am, still doing giveaways, and my account has turned more witchy.

What is important themes to you when posting pictures?

I feel like that themes have to match my mood or a picture that caught my eye so I need to share this with everyone! Most of my themes are witchy with a touch of Halloween, and some random stuff.

How much time do you spend of your day/week on Instagram?

I try not t spend a lot of time on Instagram, but I do spend a few hours a day on it. Posting, scrolling, adding stuff to my story, etc.

********Clothing/Style********

Where do you usually buy your clothes?

I usually like t buy my clothes online. There are some days where I want to buy a new dress, so I will look on Amazon. Or maybe I will want to look for a good Dungeons and Dragons T-shirt, so I will search AC10.

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

I mainly own a lot of dark colors and I wear leggings all the time! But if I leave the house I try to wear something more decent. But my color choices are still the same.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?

I usually get some cool finds at Walmart, Charlies project leggings and a thrift store! Chares project has cute Halloween leggings all year round (they are an online store). I have a good amount of leggings that are Halloween/fall related!

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

Yes, I do! The day after Christmas I went to Walmart with my Halloween themed poncho, with Halloween leggings!

Whats your favorite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes tec?

I actually have a pair of ghost face tights that I am obsessed with! they are super comfy and cool to look at. I also have Halloween keychains and necklaces too!

Have you worked hard on your style?

On my style? Not really. I feel like most of my style consists of tights and over sized t shirts. I love being comfy!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

My Mom came to the USA from Costa Rica and when she did, she embraced all of the U.S. holidays full force but Halloween was a favorite. She would sew all of our costumes by hand, throw Halloween parties with my neighbors (bobbing for apples included) and there was a certain sweet smell in the autumn air that, to this day, is the smell of Halloween to me.

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

Halloween hunting! I live for that time of year when retail catches up with the rest of us ghouls. Stepping out into stores full decorated, houses flickering in a spooky glow – it’s as close as I am gonna get to Halloweentown! Nowadays, my favorite thing is spreading the Halloween love on my IG and my blog so other Halloween fiends can fatten their collections. I do the Halloween work so you don’t have to!

Can you remeber which Halloween costume was your favourtite one?

Age 5 Little Red Riding Hood – My Mom made my dress, bonnet and basket. This is the first Halloween I fully remember and is the moment my little heart turned into a pumpkin. In homage to this, I recreated this costume 25 years later with a gory twist.

What does Halloween mean to you?

It truly is a warm feeling behind the ribs and I’ve legit teared up explaining what Halloween means to me. Maybe that’s silly but I had a rocky childhood so Halloween was magical, fun and more importantly… safe. Halloween may inspire creeps and scares but I found it to be my comfort zone.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

No matter how full I am….I will always have a place in my belly for a Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkin. MmmMmM!!!!

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

Trader Joe’s pumpkin everything! Tied would be all the Halloween inspired food at Disneyland. OMG. Help me!!!!

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

Is it horrible to say…. I never stop? LOL! The internet is a rabbit hole of Halloween treasures. Also living in Southern California, there are a lot of spooky shops: Halloweentown, Bearded Lady Vintage, Creature Features, Dark Delicacies. We also get festivals like SpookShow throughout the year – soooo basically, Halloween shopping just never ends if you don’t want it to.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

I really don’t like seeing Halloween fiends being taken advantage of by those people who go to stores, buy up all the Halloween mugs/plates/whatever and then mark them up to $85 on Ebay. I think hunting these down are the funnest part of Halloween and these people just totally ruin that. I know people still buy them at that price but it just sucks seeing a mug I bought for $3.99 at the store being sold for almost $100 online.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

The one thing that always comes to mind when I’m asked this question is: My pre-lit bat Candelabra from the 2004 Halloween collection at Target. At that time, I had just moved into my own place and was super struggling buuut I was determined to make that beauty mine and didn’t care if I was eating rice burritos for the next week! I have to say my Halloween magazine and book collection would be a close 2nd along with my Haunted Mansion items.

Do you still go trick or treating?

I don’t knock on doors anymore but I will go out with my nephew fully dressed from head to toe and live vicariously through him. LOL! The area we go to is known for their Halloween decor & good candy. I might not trick or treat but I do make it a point to dress up each year and my costumes usually require a lot of work. Recent favorites: Madame Leota, The Birds inspired, Halloween Queen and Cemetery Witch. I am really lucky that my job not only supports my Halloween spirit but they expect it! I work in a professional setting but during Halloween they let me go wild with decor and costume.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

I was 4 – My Mom was painting me blue ( I was Smurfette) and my brother green ( He was the incredible Hulk). She made my costume but I remember her putting balloons in my brothers ripped shirt to give him muscles.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

Halloween 24/7 – ALL. YEAR. LONG. During the actual season I bring out more lights, candles, carve out jack o ‘ lanterns and hang spiderwebs to make it extra special. This year I have a special theme in mind and I cannot wait to see if I can bring it to life.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

EVERYWHERE. I seriously think I have internal Halloween radar because if it’s Halloween and I am in the vicinity, I will find it! Every road trip I go on and every country I visit, I make it a point to find pieces to add to my Halloween home.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

EEEK so many! Instead of music, I put movies on for background noise. Halloweentown is my favorite to have on while doing stuff around the house. I think a lot of Halloweenies relate to Marnie’s love for Halloween and we all wish we had Cromwell magic. I think Halloween and horror tend to go hand in hand. In recent years ‘Tales of Halloween’ has been on heavy rotation. I like the vibe it gives me, fun yet scary Halloween… Kinda like me 🙂

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

I am very fortunate to live in Southern California where I have access to everything. Halloween really is available all year long pretty much! Between Monsterpalooza, Halloween Clubs SpookShow and now Midsummer Scream just being the next block over from me…. I have to say I am grateful and fortunate to be surrounded by so many creepy treats.

What made you want to start a Halloween Instagram?

I have a private and personal Instagram that I’ve had since the app first started. Within a few months, I noticed a big hole… HALLOWEEN posts. One day I decided to start a separate IG to share my Halloween crafts I was selling at that time and all the spooky adventures I would go on. Then that morphed into a daily Halloween countdown and now my IG is a playground of hauls, orange alerts, countdowns and Halloween eye candy.

What is important themes to you when you post pictures?

I love photography! I’ve been lucky enough to have art houses feature my work, and it’s also part of what I do for a living now, so it’s important to me that my aesthetic comes across in the photos I post. Especially as Halloween becomes further embraced as a lifestyle, carving out a niche amongst a sea of users can be difficult but I think developing your own style is the key. I think no matter what I post – as long as my style comes across, then it’s mission accomplished for me. When people tell me they know it’s my photo without even looking at the username…. THAT makes my day.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?

I never ever, ever, EVER expected my IG to be where it is now (not that it’s a gazillion followers or anything) but I remember reaching 1,000 followers after like TWO YEARS of posting and thinking “WOO HOO! I’ve made it! ”. Now that I am getting closer to 10,000 it feels a bit more… intense? I don’t even know if that’s the right word I am looking for.

I recently spoke out about my social anxiety on IG and how that crept into my social media. I really had to take a step back, look at myself and take a breath. It’s thanks to social media I’ve had some AMAZING opportunities these past few years. I appreciate all the dreamy opportunities I’ve been given and this year I am going to give some spooky love right back. Details coming soon!

Ps: She also have a blog where where she post all her spooky ideas and pictures! She is is slowly transitioning from her old blog to a new one,but be sure to check them both out!

Clothing / style

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

I am probably the most casual ghoul on the block so it’s pretty much Halloween and Horror tees.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us halloween addicts?

Sourpuss Clothing gets Halloween – they 100% get it. I love them. Also Modcloth has a lot of Hallween dresses and blouses that make me swoon. Sign up for mailing lists, get coupons!

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

Yes! Even at work I’ll pull in Halloween elements whether it’s my shoes, headband or a pin – I am repping Halloween everywhere I go.

Whats your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes tec?

My Haunted Mansion bags are my favorite. Some of them get hard to find (or expensive) so when they’re released I jump on them.

Have you worked hard on your style?

Not at all! The halloweenxo starter pack consists of: Halloween/horror tee cut to fit, skinny jeans, ballet flats or vans, headband and a light jacket with some kind of spooky pin! Give me my pumpkin purse and I am good to go.
