What made you love Halloween so strongly?
It’s a time when most people celebrate by being someone else, but for me, Halloween allows me to be myself! It permits people to embrace the darker side of life and gives community to those who would otherwise live in the shadows.
How did you get into Halloween?
My mom was never a Halloween fan. We had one Casper foam mold and that’s it for decorations. I remember making pumpkins out of notebook paper for my Barbies, locking myself in my bedroom to watch Halloweentown, and celebrating in private. It wasn’t until I left for college that I was able to unlock the next level of my Halloween heart. The first things I bought for myself when I left for college were Halloween decorations! My cat was born on Halloween, so I always threw her a Halloween birthday party. It’s grown from there as a way to honor her memory, which is the spirit of Halloween! I’ve more than made up for my lack of Halloween decor as a child! 😂
What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween?
I love driving around looking for Halloween lights and outdoor decorations.
Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourite one?
My mom made me and my doll matching birthday present costumes out of wrapped cardboard boxes complete with balloons.

What does Halloween mean to you?
Halloween is a magical time of year that has unlimited potential. You can be whoever you want to be! The earth dies so that it can be born again in spring. It’s a beautiful time where each of us can do the same. For me, it’s also a time of remembrance for lost loved ones. We honor the past, while being hopeful for the future.
Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get nowadays, what is your favourite? (Old Classics/ New style candy etc)
Unreal crispy dark chocolate peanut butter cups

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?
I like warm, fall harvest foods like apple crisp and apple cider. One thing I always make is notdog mummies (I’m vegan.) I had my first PSL last year from my co-op, and while it wasn’t life changing, I did find myself ordering one just because I could! Haha!
When do you start shopping for Halloween?
I never stop!
What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?
The feeling of Halloween magic and no familial obligations!!!
Do you think it has any negative sides to it?
There’s good and bad in everything, but it’s what you make of it. There are misunderstandings about the origins and meaning of the holiday that make some religious people think it’s an evil day. Of course a little research into the history and traditions will reveal the magic!
What is the favorite Halloween item you have?
I can’t pick just one. My vintage Halloween collections including my blow molds and also my candy corn tree are the things that bring me the most joy!

Do you still go trick or treating?
No, not since I was a child.
Can you remember your first Halloween memory?
There was a massive blizzard when I was very little and we had to wear full snow suits under our costumes. We only drove to our grandma’s house and had to head back home. Snowfall in my area of the state was around 16 inches, but the Twin Cities, where I live now, got 24.4 inches!
Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time?
I do keep quite a bit out year-round, but I rotate my collections with seasons as well. Full on decorating begins in July when I simply can’t take it any longer and need to surround myself with as much Halloween magic as I can!
Where do you buy your Halloween items?
I prefer to limit my carbon footprint as much as possible, so buying second hand through thrift stores, estate sales, yard/ garage/ rummage sales, and vintage stores is my favorite. I find so many unique items at great prices!

What’s your favourite Halloween movie/series?
Halloweentown is by far my favorite movie and series. I remember watching it on TV when it premiered and making sure to catch it whenever it was on. The final movie (with a different Marnie 😖) came out when I was in college, and I made sure everyone knew it was my sacred time. It has always been such a magical movie series that gave me a reprieve from the harsh realities of life!
How is Halloween celebrated in the US?
Parties, zombie crawls, trick/ trunk or treating
Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?
No, not at all!

Instagram

What made you want to start a Halloween Instagram?
I didn’t set out to start a Halloween account, it just went in that direction organically as I grew into myself. This past year and change has been very difficult for so many people and I personally need a daily dose of Halloween to get through the dark times. It’s nice to let my Halloween flag fly instead of keeping it a secret!
What are important themes to you when you post pictures?
I try to keep a cohesive look to my photos with lighting and color schemes.
How much time do you spend of your day/week on Instagram?
I cannot answer that, but I’m sure it’s much more than is healthy 🤣
Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?
I don’t think I’ve achieved any level of fame, but I always act shocked when I see my cats and tell them that I follow them on Instgram! As you can see, they don’t find it amusing 😹

If I don’t thrift them, I love Vixen by Micheline Pitt and Sourpuss Clothing.

Pinup, but I’m going to be honest, if I’m at home, I’m not wearing pants nor dressed to impress. That’s most of the time!
Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?
Follow spooky brand and fashion accounts on Instagram for the latest styles. Halloween people are generally very supportive of companies and makers within the community so it’s easy to find awesome clothes and accessories!

Laura is the amazing Ghoul behind the Instagram @ghostlyvintage!

She shares the cutest pictures of everything spooky and vintage!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

– When I was little I always had a thing for Halloween. I used to run home from school to watch Mona the Vampire, Grizzly Tales for gruesome kids, Goosebumps and more on the TV. These were what ignited my love for Halloween / spooky things.

How did you get into Halloween ?

– I guess over the years I just started collecting bits here and there. If it was makeup, home decor, clothing ect. Of course all Halloween / Horror related!

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

– Giving sweets “candy” out to the kids who actually dress up. Not to the chavs who knock on my door, and don’t even say “Trick or Treat”

Can you remeber which Halloween costume was your favourtite one?

– Yes! I dressed up as the Black Dahlia a few years back.

What does Halloween mean to you?

– Halloween means a lot to me because it’s a part of who I am. Sounds cheesy, but I can freely express myself with the whole genre.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy

– Ohh you got me there! We don’t have a huge selection of Halloween candy here in the UK, but I’d say I love “Scream Eggs” by Cadburys.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

– Hmm, I enjoy making Bat shaped sandwiches for my friends and spooky cocktails!

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

– All year round! I like to pick up bits and bobs off eBay, or from Halloween related shops like @october31st!

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

– I guess it’s a time where you can express yourself. If it’s with makeup, clothes or even just appreciating the history and culture behind the holiday.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

– Ohhh that’s going to be a tough one as I have lots of items! I normally incorporate spooky things in my style on a daily basis, so I’d probably my backseat baby purse from @sourpussclothing! But if you mean home decor, probably my “candy corn” Yankee candle 😀

Do you still go trick or treating?

– Sadly not!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

– I remember when my mum decided to dress me up as a fairy. I hated it because it wasn’t creepy or spooky at all.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

– They are up all year round in my crypt!

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

– I pick bits and bobs up everywhere. If it’s from local shops, eBay or Halloween related online shops.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

– Too many to choose from haha! But I’m currently watching Penny Dreadful again which is amazing.

How is Halloween celebrated in the UK?

– Sadly it’s not celebrated as much as it should be! You see the odd person dress up where I am, but the majority of the time people don’t bother anymore which is sad. Bring back proper trick or treating!!!

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

-Hmm, it depends if you like cheap and tacky. You can get things from the £1 shop or “dollar store”, but I wouldn’t say they were the best for all year decor. The best place to get them are specialist stores. But they cost a fortune.

Instagram

What made you want to start a Halloween related Instagram?

-I guess I just enjoyed sharing Halloween/ spooky related posts, and being able to share my interests with other fellow halloweenies.

What is important themes to you when posting pictures?

– I’m all for themes that’s for sure! If you’ve followed me for awhile you’ll see that I go through “phases”. Sometimes a section of my Instagram is all dark, other times bright and even the odd bit of pink! Of course most of the posts are still related to Halloween along the line.

How much time do you spend of your week do you spend on Instagram?

– Probably too much if I’m honest! I have a love hate relationship with Instagram.

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?

– I normally buy my clothes online. I’m currently in love with Voodoo Vixen, Hell Bunny & Sourpuss Clothing!

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us halloween addicts?

– I suppose it depends on what style you go for? Killstar is good if you want more nu goth, Deadly Dames if you want classic horror pinup and Sourpuss if you want a more gothabilly alt look!

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

About 98% of the time I do, yes!

Whats your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc?

– I have a little Pumpkin Brooch from Luxulite which is my favourite!

Have you worked hard on your style?

– Definitely. I’ve gone through multiple styles to finally be able to find what suits me. I’ve come to terms with the fact I love vintage and spooky! I mix and match my style & Instagram with whatever mood I’m in.

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

I find everything about Halloween utterly enchanting. I tend to get really corny when I talk about how I feel about Halloween. It’s just such a magical time of year; you can really just feel something crackling in the air in October. I love the glow of Halloween lights, the decorations, the weather, the costumes, the candy, the element of the unknown. It’s all of my favorite things in one glorious holiday!

How did you get into Halloween ?

My mom is also really into Halloween, so it was always a big deal in my house growing up. Although, she’ll be the first one to admit I’ve taken it to a whole new level.

What is your favorite things to do on/around halloween ?

Going to all the stores and just taking everything in they’ve got in stock. Even if I don’t buy anything, seeing the shelves stocked with Halloween goodies is the first taste of the season. I always take time to watch old TV specials and movies that I grew up with. There’s also this really amazing corn maze and pumpkin patch that I try to hit every year.

Can you remeber which Halloween costume was your favourtite one?

Aaaah! Can I pick a couple? When I was in middle school, I was a nun with tattoos and a cigarette which was a big hit in the neighborhood. Recently, I’ve done Winifred Sanderson and a pumpkin head that I am really proud of.

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween means happiness. Nothing brings me as much joy as seeing smiling jack-o-lanterns and smelling that crisp fall air. Halloween just makes me unapologetically happy, which I guess is why I try to keep Halloween with me all year.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

I love mellowcreme pumpkins! They are quintessential Halloween fare.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

Halloween Oreos are a defining Halloween food for me. My family always saves them to eat on the actual day itself. I also love making witches’ fingers with my mom.

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

More like when do I ever stop? 🙂 Seriously, I did just find a few things the other day that I snagged. Usually, though I would say July, when most stores start stocking new Halloween pieces.

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

It’s such a cheerful holiday. You get to put up fun decorations and dress up. You don’t have to stress over gifts, you just get to enjoy a fun holiday filled with spooky goodness.

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

I think it gets a bad rap from certain people because it deals with the dead and has a pagan origin, but you still see those same people celebrating Easter with pagan symbolism no problem so….

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Oh man! Uhhh… I would say my animatronic witch and Frankenstein. They’re about 12 inches tall and I think my mom bought them in the 80’s. I love them so much. They make me smile every year. This past year when I was in Halloweentown I actually found a vampire version as well that I added to the family!

Do you still go trick or treating?

Yes! You can pry trick or treating from my cold, dead hands. For me, trick or treating is the ultimate Halloween experience. All of October is special, but being out on Halloween night, walking around spooky neighborhoods is beyond magical.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

My earliest Halloween memory is very fuzzy and it’s of me trick or treating in my neighborhood with sandwich bags around my shoes because it was raining that night. Like that’s it, that’s all I remember.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

I do have a lot of spooky décor. I have bats and gargoyles and tombstones up all year, but I usually save most of my Halloween decorations for the season. I’ve found that when I keep up a lot all year, I’m not as excited when October rolls around. Consequently, I moderate a bit of what I keep up. I’ve still got some Halloween goodies out though, they just make me so happy.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

All over. I really like Target’s Halloween collection, so I usually grab some items from there. But I pick up Halloween from antique stores, thrift shops, Wal-Mart, Target, and shops on Etsy. Basically, if they sell Halloween, I’m there.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

I’m going to avoid the traditional answers here and go with The Scream Team. It was a Disney Channel Original Movie from I think 2002 and it’s one of my all-time favorites.

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Candy and hijinks abound on Halloween. Traditionally, people dress up in costumes and either go trick or treating or throw parties or go to haunted houses.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

Nope, decorations are everywhere.

________________________________________youtube

What made you want to start making halloween videos?

I’m very passionate about Halloween and I love to talk about things relating to the holiday, so I thought that a YouTube channel would be a good outlet where I could ramble on about all of the creepy things I’m interested in.

What is important themes to you when you make videos?

I try to keep all of my videos positive. I see my channel as a space where people who love Halloween can celebrate together all year round. With how dark life can get, I want to offer as much positive Halloween cheer as I can. I’m a firm believer in escapism, so I try to keep my videos upbeat and fun so that viewers can forget about their problems and just revel in creepy cheer for a bit. I’m not necessarily a positive person, so I’ve caught myself a few times I’ll be down on something or complaining. That’s not what I want on my channel. I want people to enjoy whatever time they spend on my channel.

How much time do you spend of your day/week making videos?

Eek! Okay, I’ve been rather inconsistent with my videos. BUT I’m working to on being more regular on my channel. So this past week, I’ve probably spend several hours filming and editing new videos. Stay Tuned!!

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween persona?

Hahahaha! I don’t think the word “fame” applies here! My YouTube channel actually has a very small audience, who I love. I really appreciate it when people take time out of their day to watch one of my videos. That’s a very flattering thing and I’m incredibly grateful if even one person watches me ramble on about Halloween. It’s so nice to be able to share something you’re passionate with others who share that passion. I was raised on Internet Stranger Danger propaganda, so I’m a bit paranoid about sharing personal info online. Consequently, I’m not sure how well I would handle it if lots of people did know who I was.

______________________________________

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?

Again, all over! A lot of them come from thrift shops and online. I own a lot of Sourpuss clothing. I also use apps like Depop and Poshmark to score deals on clothes. I’m a bargain babe all the way, never pay full price!

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

I really like vintage style clothing, although my preferred decade changes daily.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us halloween addicts?

Sourpuss, Pinup Girl Clothing is pricey but they have cute prints (try searching on Depop or Poshmark), Sweet Midnight has adorable prints on everything from shoes to dresses, Hell Bunny, check out your local thrift stores! You have to be in the mood to dig, but I have found some great Halloween shirts and sweaters for crazy prices.

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

Yes! I love my creepy clothes and I wear them all the time. I’ve had several coworkers tell me they love to see what strange getup I’m wearing each day… which I’m not sure is complimentary.

Whats your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes tec?

Actually, I have this outfit that I wore while I was in Halloweentown which has all of my favorite pieces. It’s such a feel good outfit. There’s a jack-o-lantern dress from Pinup Girl Clothing, witch boots from Y.R.U, and my beautiful pumpkin purse from Love Pain and Stitches. The whole ensemble just screams Halloween and it just makes me happy when I wear it. (Plus the dress has pockets)

Have you worked hard on your style?

Not really. My style is very inconsistent. One day I’ll be in 5 inch platforms and a skeleton dress and the next I’ll look like a disheveled grandma. I like to play dress up and that comes through in my day to day clothes.

Halloween Queen : Spooky Little Halloween!

Halloween Queens

Name: Miranda
Age: 33
From : Houston, TX, USA

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

As a girl, I always loved books because I could escape into another world and be someone else. I think that’s part of why I became a writer.

Back then, I probably wouldn’t have realized it, but I think that’s why I love Halloween so much too – it was a real-life chance to dress up as someone else for a night and kind of escape into a fictional world.

How did you get into Halloween?

I’m not sure if there was a single moment I could point to and say, “That’s the moment I started loving Halloween!” It’s always been a part of me. There are definitely some moments, though.

When I was 5 or 6, I remember my mom spending time with me to make Halloween crafts while my brother was at preschool which made me special. I cherished those for years and still have the pieces!

When I was 12 or 13, I spend all Halloween afternoon creating my own graveyard in the front yard for fellow trick-or-treaters to enjoy. I really enjoyed creating a Halloween experience for someone else.

What is your favorite things to do on/around Halloween?

I LOVE carving pumpkins. It doesn’t feel like Halloween until I’m squishing pumpkin guts between my fingers. I also like sending my friends and family Halloween cards. I LOVE visiting stores to check out their Halloween decor, and I host my annual Halloween party, Halloweenie Roast.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourite one?

It was definitely the year I was a bat! It was my first DIY costume. I worked hard to pull together all the pieces of my costume. I made bat ears, and my mom made me a bat cape. It was simple, but I loved it because I had created it.

(The letdown was most people thought I was a black cat! I spent most of the night angrily sticking out my arms so they could see my bat wings.)

What does Halloween mean to you?

Halloween is fun and a night to escape reality. It’s a season where you can let your imagination run wild and be yourself.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get nowadays, what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

As a kid, I was obsessed with SweeTarts. One year I traded away so much of my chocolate, I ended up with more than 200 packets of SweeTarts!

These days, Almond Snickers are at the top of my list. You can get them as candy bars year-round now, but you can only find the mini bars at Halloween. I also fell in love with Reese’s peanut butter cup bats this year. I still have a couple in my freezer.

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I love a fun Halloween cocktail. They’re a fun way to incorporate crazy colors and flavors into your celebration.

When do you start shopping for Halloween?

I’m not sure I ever really stop! Just two weeks ago, I was in a dollar store picking up black and orange party decor. I can find Halloween almost anywhere!

What about Halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

Halloween has always felt magical to me. It’s a season full of possibility, and I look forward to that every year!

Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

I think Halloween is what you make it. It’s not a holiday that’s for everyone…but I think that’s true of any holiday. Some will naturally resonate with you more than others. Rather than trashing the ones you dislike (or the people who celebrate them), I say celebrate the ones you love to the fullest!

What is the favorite Halloween item you have?

It has to be my complete set of Halloween Happy Meal pails. They are so iconic now for Halloween lovers, and I feel incredibly lucky that I managed to hang on to all three of them for all these years.

Do you still go trick or treating?

I wish! I do have a young niece and nephew who I will go trick or treating with, but for now my own trick or treating days are over.

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

The first year we lived in Texas, I dressed up as a witch. I was five years old, and I remember trick or treating with my little brother, who was just 2 or 3, and our neighbor who was the same age as my brother. It was fun being the older kid and getting to show them what Halloween was all about.

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time?

Last spring I redid my entire bedroom with black-and-white photos I’ve taken of Halloween items. It’s been fun sleeping in a spooky lair! I also have a few things I repurpose for year-round use, like skulls or apothecary jars. I’m finding more of my Halloween decor creeps into my everyday decor each year.

When it comes to decorating for Halloween, I wait until early to mid-September. As much as I love Halloween, I do like celebrating each holiday when it’s appropriate, so I probably wait a little longer than most Halloween lovers to decorate.

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

Everywhere! Etsy has become a favorite place to find unique Halloween decor. I also love following cool shops on Instagram.

As for larger stores, I always love shopping at Michaels, JoAnn and At Home. A lot of my favorite things have come from their Halloween collections.

What’s your favourite Halloween movie/series?

Is it too predictable if I say “Hocus Pocus”? Haha! It’s just such a good story, and you can’t beat that it was filmed in Salem. It doesn’t feel like Halloween season until I’ve watched it at least once.

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

So many different ways! Personally, I enjoy hosting a themed costume party for my friends and family every year.

Kids, of course, go trick or treating on Halloween night, but events called “Trunk or Treat” have become popular. These are usually hosted by churches, and the adult participants decorate the trunk of their car/van/truck with a theme. Then kids go trick or treating from car to car – for some, it’s viewed as a safer option than roaming the neighborhood on Halloween night.

There are also lots of large costume parties around the city I live in, as well as bar crawls. My city even has a Halloween music festival called Something Wicked! (I’ve never been, though, because it’s not my kind of music.)

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

Never! Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, so I am spoiled with an endless amount of stores to explore for Halloween decorations every year…and I take full advantage of it!

Blogging

What made you want to start a Halloween blog?

Pinterest and a whim! For awhile I had thought about starting a blog solely dedicated to Halloween, but I kept telling myself, “Eh, no one will read it.” Then one day I was organizing boards on my personal Pinterest account, and I had SO many Halloween pins to organize it made me realize my love of Halloween wasn’t going to die anytime soon…and I decided on the spot to start a Halloween blog, just for fun! I’m SO glad I did.

What is important themes to you when you write posts?

I write about a lot of different topics – I like sharing cool Halloween items I find online as well as sharing DIY projects, recipes and party ideas. Overall, I always want to make sure every post is a way a reader can celebrate Halloween either during the season or in their everyday life.

How much time do you spend of your day/week writing posts?

Too much, I’m sure! I work full time, and when I come home in the evenings, I’ll usually sit down at my writing desk and work on blog posts or projects. I also use my weekends to work on larger projects, like recipe posts or DIYs. It’s a ton of fun getting to think about Halloween all the time.

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame by being a known Halloween blogger?

Haha! I’m not sure there’s much fame associated with being a Halloween blogger – there’s really not that many of us. I have yet to have anyone come up and ask if I’m the girl from Spooky Little Halloween, but maybe one day it’ll happen and it’ll be a cool feeling.
______________________________________

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes?

I don’t really stick to one store – I look for things that I like and that I feel comfortable wearing. Sometimes that’s a $65 dress. Other days it’s a $5 T-shirt.

What style of clothing do you like to buy?

I like things with interesting details, but I also like things that are comfortable. I look for clothes that are versatile so I can dress them up or down with accessories.

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us Halloween addicts?

Sourpuss Clothing has some great stuff! I also love Em & Sprouts’ (on Etsy) Halloween items. I think the key is to always be looking and always be Googling! You’d be amazed at the amount of Halloween things you can find on the Internet.

Do you wear Halloween/horror styled clothes all year?

I wear a lot of skulls year-round. I also have a large collection of Halloween enamel pins I’m working on incorporating into my daily wardrobe. Jewelry is the easiest way for me to add Halloween to an outfit – I have lots of earrings and necklaces too!

What’s your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes etc.?

I scored my first Love, Pain and Stitches pumpkin purse last summer totally by accident. I arrived to the bi-weekly sale 45 minutes late, but the PERFECT bag was still available…so I bought it! I love it because jack-o-lanterns are my favorite and got a lot of compliments on it all October last year.

Have you worked hard on your style?

When it comes to Halloween clothing, I think my style is still evolving. I’m continuing to collect more shirts and dresses to wear year-round. I’m excited to see what I have in another year or so!

What made you love Halloween so strongly?

Halloween has always been my favorite thing since as long as I can remember. I had early experiences with the paranormal so after that I was always fascinated by ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night. Halloween had all of that in a magical, fun way, so it was a natural draw. I mean I could actually become my favorite monster for a night?? What’s cooler than that, right? Growing up in rural Massachusetts, the area is so historical with endless ancient architecture and cemetaries dating back to the mid-1600s (for America, that is really old) LOL. When I was 4, my mother ran a Saturday science school for older kids at our home, so my dad and I would go get ice cream and explore the local 17th and 18th century cemeteries in Concord together every Saturday. We would read all the tombstones and look at all the intricate carvings that were so dark and beautiful. It really instilled in me a love of history at an early age, and of course, it encouraged my love of all things creepy, macabre and mysterious. Halloween just encapsulates all the things I love but in a fun way, so it was a perfect fit. From monsters to ghouls to haunted houses and hayrides- I loved it all and still do.

How did you get into Halloween ?

I don’t remember when I began trick or treating- it was probably as a baby, but Halloween was always a big thing, and we always participated every year. Trick or treating every year with a new costume handmade by my mother was my favorite night of the year, especially because we got to go all over town with our friends. This was the late 1980’s/early 90’s, long before real terrorism and kidnapping fears, so we got to go out ALONE as kids at night! It was soooo thrilling, especially dressing up on the most magical night of the year with a pack of your best friends in tow.

About 2 weeks before Halloween, my brother and I would get to pick out our pumpkins at the local farmstand to take home and carve. I remember vividly my parents buying a kids carving kit at Zare’s (which became Kmart later) just so we could carve our own jack o’lanterns. We would draw scary faces on the pumpkins with marker and carefully saw our designs into the smooth pumpkin skin until they were creepy perfect! I remember finishing the afternoon by roasting the pumpkin seeds and eating them for a salty snack. And I was so excited jumping off the school bus every autumn afternoon and seeing those orange grinning gourds on the front porch! The best view ever!

Screenshot_20180203-141825.jpg

Halloween was also widely celebrated at my school. We would have a costume contest, parade and class party, and we would also create endless Halloween themed artwork in our art class come September and October. I still have an orange paper jack o’ lantern I made with yellow plastic inserts for the eyes, nose and mouth. I hung it in the window every year, and I was sooo proud of it!LOL

Halloween was everywhere in the fall, and I just adored it. Even the grocery store was decorated to the hilt in orange and black crepe paper. I remember vividly going in a Hallmark store around 1989-90 and seeing all the glorious Halloween items including these black cat clip-on earrings. I was probably 8, but I begged and begged for those earrings! LOL I wanted them sooo bad. And boy was I proud when my parents finally got them for me! I wore them year-round. I also got a Halloween sweater I would wear every fall. So fun and thrilling! I so wish I still had those things today.

What is your favorite thing to do on/around halloween ?
My favorite things to do leading up to Halloween are definitely decorating and watching Halloween shows and movies. As a kid I always wanted to decorate crazily for Halloween, but my parents were not really into it. We would carve pumpkins and maybe have a witch diecut for the front door and that was it. LOL I was so dismayed! I would make tons of my own paper decorations and hang them up just to have more around. I remember getting so excited when my dad bought Halloween leaf bags instead of the regular black yard bags to rake the leaves into. They had a jack o’ lantern pattern, and we filled them with leaves and put them on the front lawn for October. I was just so ecstatic over those bags! LOL So now I go all out for Halloween with a vintage theme, and I love every minute of planning it and installing it! My favorite Halloween movies as a kid were Disney’s Halloween Treat which was on every year along with other Disney favorites such as Mr. Boogedy and other cartoon specials. Now I love and watch them all year round, but I enjoy what’s on tv during the Halloween season too. On Halloween night I generally hand out candy to kids (if I get trick or treaters) and eat treats and watch Hocus Pocus.

Can you remember which Halloween costume was your favourite one?

My mom made our costumes every year, and she made so many it’s hard to remember them all. I recall I was a bumbleee, black cat, white rabbit, cheerleader, witch, Hershey’s kiss, ghost, hippie, etc. I have a few favorites- I remember the bumblebee was a favorite because my antennae were battery powered skulls that flashed on and off. I was around 7, and I thought they were sooo cool! LOL I also won the costume contest at school with another kid, and we got to lead the costume parade in the cafeteria, so of course I was beside myself excited about that. I also loved my witch costume because I had a plastic witch nose glued to my face. It smelled terrible but was covered in warts, and I had a black wig with a white stripe down the side, so I felt sooo authentic in the classic Halloween witch hag kinda way. I got to be scary, and I liked it. I remember walking through the neighborhood in the freezing cold dragging a full size broom with the moon shining and dry leaves crunching underfoot . The jack o’ lanterns were glowing on the porches, and I was an enchanting witch who just fit the scene. I belonged, and it was pure magic.

What does Halloween mean to you?
Halloween is magic to me. It’s the one night of the year when anything is possible, and being wierd is actually celebrated. It’s also when I feel the most in alignment with nature and those who have gone before. It’s always been like a New Year to me- a new start, and new magical beginning. And the black cats, jack o’lanterns and ghouls are all friends who come to life on October 31st.

Of all the amazing Halloween candy you can get now adays , what is your favourite? ( Old Classics/ New style candy etc )

My favorite candy has always been anything chocolate! Now it is definitely Reese’s Buttercups. As kids, my brother and I would always count our candy when we finished trick or treating (one year I got like 130 pieces- it was crazy! LOL), and then we would trade with each other what we didn’t like. We both liked chocolate the best though Jon liked certain kinds more than I did (like snickers and mars bars). Our parents let us keep all of our candy, so we would pig out like actual piggly wigglies every day after school for months! LOL Back then I loved Kitkats, Reese’s and Hershey’s bars the best. I have food allergies now that I didn’t have as a kid, so what I can eat has changed somewhat. But I still love Reese’s Buttercups and solid dark chocolate!

What Halloween food and drinks are you most excited about?

I’m a fool for any Halloween-themed cupcake! LOL For my Halloween party back in 2013, my sister Mallory was my co-host. She’s an incredible baker, and she created tombstone cupcakes that were simply amazing. She crumbled chocolate cookies for a dirt-like topping and then stuck an upright cookie in the top for the RIP tombstone. I loved them so much, and they were delicious! As for drinks, I have always gravitated towards warm apple cidar or hot chocolate. I’m allergic to alchohol and I don’t drink soda, so that leaves the classics (oh and a ghoulish homemade fruit punch is always good too).

Screenshot_20180203-142810Screenshot_20180203-142623Screenshot_20180203-142810

When do you start shopping for Halloween ?

I never stop! LOL I shop year-round for vintage pieces which I usually find in antique stores and thrift stores and online. Of course, the best shopping is always in August when Halloween retail begins for the season. I do my most shopping then for all of the fantastic reproductions on the market.

When I was a kid, I would be looking for Halloween dollhouse items year round- I’ve always been obsessed with dollhouses and minatures, and one year I found a witch figurine while visiting my grandmother in Ohio. It was like I won the lottery- I was just so excited! I still have her to his day along with some other Halloween miniatures.

What about halloween makes it your favorite holiday?

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it! LOL This interview is really fun for me because I’m having to really sit down and think about why I love Halloween so much. I think I love it because it revolves around my favorite things- autumn, cold weather, ghosts and monsters, mystery and magic- all of which I’m fascinated by. There’s also just something so liberating about the idea of wearing a costume- you can be anything for a night! Even a creature that isn’t real. It’s so fun!

Screenshot_20180203-140927.jpg
Do you think it has any negative sides to it?

Well, you have the trick or treating urban legends about razor blades in apples and poisoned candy which aren’t good (though they are generally just urban legends). Kids in the early 20th century were major mischief makers setting fire to buildings and vandalizing homes, etc., which was a problem solved by trick or treating. Give a kid candy and they’re happy! LOL The only other negative aspect of it usually revolves around certain groups of people believing Halloween has some relationship to evil or the devil. I think this is so lame! LOL My ex-boyfriend’s parents believed this and he was only allowed to trick or treat as a kid if he was a normal person as his costume. So he could only be a cowboy, a policeman or a fireman, and he wasn’t allowed to eat most of his candy. Sooo lame! I think it thwarts a child’s creativity on a night that is fun and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. It’s a night of magic and all kids should be able to express themselves freely. My 7-year-old angel nephew who’s the sweetest kid on earth wanted to be the Grim Reaper for Halloween and my brother and sister-in-law ordered the scariest costume they could find complete with lightup red eyes and a scythe. Sloan was elated! And he wasn’t corrupted by it- it’s just harmless fun. And that’s how it should be.

What is the Favorite Halloween item you have?

Oh gosh! It’s so hard to choose. I’d say my vintage papier mache jack o’lantern with the original face insert. He’s just so ghoulish! I adore him.

Screenshot_20180203-143843.jpg

My second favorite would have to be my green paper witch pinata that I found at the thrift store for $3 as a lot with a 1940’s Beistle scarecrow. Fabulous!

Screenshot_20180203-143604.jpg

Do you still go trick or treating?

I wish! Though it would be wierd to have a grown adult show up on people’s doorsteps! LOL My friends, Nicole and Rob, used to throw the BEST Halloween party every year until they moved to New York City. They would rent out a bar and Rob’s cover band would play all night and we would dress up and party. SO fun!

Can you remember your first Halloween memory?

I think my first Halloween memory was from when I was 4, and I was going trick or treating with my friend, Rachel. It was already dark out, and my dad was driving me to Rachel’s house through a dense fog. We could barely see the stone walls along the street through the fog and then Monster Mash came on the radio and it was sooooo spooky and fun. I just loved it! Also Rachel had an ancient Victorian house (think the Addams Family house but painted yellow), so that was an added spooky touch. I don’t remember what my costume was from that Halloween, but it was my first big memory!

Do you keep all your Halloween decorations out all year or do you start decorating at a certain time ?

I keep my favorite vintage and reproduction pieces out in a glass front cabinet year round. I also have a faux fall tree branch I made that has orange Halloween lights on it year round. But everything else tends to be stored until late August when it begins to come out in the house. And I have 10 large bins, so it’s a lot, but sooo fun! I usually layer in fall decor first in August (like faux foliage canopys and garlands), and then add in Halloween around mid-September until the whole house is done. This year I got so many new favorite pieces they began to overflow to the top of the cabinet and next to it. My dream is to one day have a room dedicated to my collection where it’s Halloween year round! Someday I’ll have one.

Screenshot_20180203-142645.jpg

Where do you buy your Halloween items?

I buy my vintage pieces at local antique stores, thrift stores and online (on sites like eBay and etsy). During the Halloween season (August through October in America) I buy reproductions in stores like Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, Michael’s, Joann Fabrics and others, but my favorite place to buy reproductions online year round is www.christmastraditions.com. They have really outstanding pieces in a vintage style made by really outstanding artists such as Johanna Parker and Bethany Lowe.

Whats your favourite halloween movie/series?

Oh this is a hard one! LOL I adore kids Halloween movies the most because I grew up with a lot of them and I like fun spooky movies the best. Along that line I would have to say Hocus Pocus, the Halloweentown series, Mr. Boogedy and its sequel, Bride of Boogedy, The Haunted Mansion (with Eddie Murphy), Disney’s animated Bing Crosby-narrated Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Teen Wolf (starring Michael J. Fox), Casper, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, Hotel Transylvania, Scooby Doo (the early animated seasons from the 1960’s/70’s) and Nightmare Before Christmas (though I was not allowed to see this as a kid and only first saw it when I was 25!). Anything by Tim Burton I love- Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Corpse Bride. Girl Vs. Monster on Netflix is sooo dorky yet so enjoyable!

For more adult movies, I love Sleepy Hollow (with Johnny Depp), The Craft, Interview with the Vampire, the Ghostbusters series and I adore The Munsters. I tend to enjoy Hitchcock and the classic monster movies and atmospheric supernatural flicks like Crimson Peak, The VVitch, The Shining and I am The Pretty Thing that Lives in the House. My favorite horror genre is supernatural or monster.

I’m not a huge slasher movie fan as I don’t like a lot of gore, though I’ve gotten into them more with my subscription to Horror Pack. I did watch Halloween last year and really liked it! (I’ve seen 1 and 2 and then Halloween H2O).

For tv shows, I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I used to watch it in high school and rewatched it all ten years ago), True Blood, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and of course the sci-fi great, Stranger Things, and some of the new Netflix series. Dark was extremely good though that is more sci-fi.

As a side note, I was not allowed to watch anything actually scary as a kid. Watcher in the Woods slipped through the cracks somehow and scared the sh$t out of me. LOL I still think it’s super creepy to this day, and I can’t believe it’s considered a kid’s movie. And then I saw Child’s Play 2 at my friend, Amy Cardillo’s, tenth birthday party (and I was scarred for life as I’m terrified of dolls! LOL). When I was 14, I begged and begged my parents to let me see Interview with the Vampire to no avail. So I got the poster and hung it on my wall (I mean, young and dreamy Tom Cruise was always a plus, and he was a vampire! LOL). My brother and I rented it years later when I was in college, and I loved it. Well worth the wait!

How is Halloween celebrated in the US?

Trick or Treating is the main event for kids, and it’s universally celebrated across the nation. Kids go door-to-door in costume and collect candy from strangers and neighbors on Halloween night. Pumpkins are usually carved into jack o’lanterns and lighted and placed on the front porch of the home or in the front window to ward off evil spirits (or just because it’s a tradition! Most people aren’t superstitious about it). Then there are tons of outside house decorations and lights up usually the whole month of October! Some people even do home haunts. A lot of cities celebrate Halloween with a parade or big costume party, and many people have adult costume parties at their homes during October or on Halloween night. Halloween is only second to Christmas for American holiday retail sales, so there is an abundance of items for sale August through October! It’s really fabulous the amount of cool stuff you can find, and every year has a different variety. Many haunted attractions are in full swing for September and October- from polished professional haunted houses you pay admission for to a country farmyard haunted hayride. I actually went on a haunted hayride as a kid, and it was a childhood highlight! A local farmer turned his corn field into a haunted maze with actors who would jump out and scare you at night, so of course I wanted to go! LOL I begged for weeks to go, and finally my Dad took me and a friend one cold October night when I was 10. So fun and unforgettable! I loved it, and I love all the Halloween festivities we celebrate each year.

Is it difficult finding Halloween decorations in your town/city?

Not at all. It’s super easy and abundant since Houston is such a large city!

What made you want to start making halloween videos?
It was so random because I had never even thought about being on Youtube or having my own channel. It didn’t even occur to me. I had started my Halloween instagram account randomly for fun and was super suprised when I started getting followers! LOL I thought I’d have like 200, but by last summer it had grown to about 4k.

Screenshot_20180203-144619

Well, one day last summer I posted a video to my IG account talking about something (I can’t remember what). My friend, Blakely, saw it and she’s a PR/marketing master. She was like, Laura, you need to start a Youtube channel! You’re really good on camera and you could become a Halloween influencer on social media. LOL I was like um what?? LOL But then I thought about it and decided it would be really fun to post Halloween project tutorials on a Youtube channel along with my Halloween decor as I’m super passionate about decorating. And there you go! I haven’t made a ton of videos but they’re super fun, and I’m excited to grow my channel in the future. And my friend was right, because my IG account grew to 11K followers by Halloween after adding my Youtube account. So that was crazy!

Screenshot_20180203-144923.jpg

What are important themes to you when you make videos?
My channel is called A Vintage Halloween, so I like to focus on vintage and reproduction Halloween decor, collecting and decorating. Also fun craft ideas anyone can easily recreate such as how to make fall garlands and gold leaf monsters. I also started a series called my Ghost Chronicles about my own ghost experiences as a child, and it was really interesting how people would comment about their own experiences.

How much time do you spend of your day/week making videos?

Usually a few hours per week. I haven’t made any new videos in a while, but I’m aiming for about 2 per month later this year. I just moved back to Houston from the country, so I’ve been preoccupied trying to find a job, etc.!

Can it sometimes be difficult for you to handle the fame being a known Halloween persona?

I don’t consider myself famous by any measure, however having 11k people enjoying your IG posts and Youtube channel does put a certain amount of pressure on you to continue to output a very high level of imagery and creative new ideas for videos. That said, rather than view it as a negative thing, I see it as a super fun outlet for imagination to run wild, and I have really enjoyed it. Like it’s one of the most enjoyable things I’ve ever done. And all of ya’ll are my pals! So for me it’s more about casually sharing my love for Halloween judgement free with fellow enthusiasts on this awesome platform we call social media. _____________________________________________________________

Clothing / style

Where do you usually buy your clothes ?
I tend to buy my clothes at discount stores like Home Goods/Marshalls and TJ Maxx or at Nordstrom depending on what I’m looking for.

what style of clothing do you like to buy?

My favorite style is anything Victorian-inspired. I’ve always felt odd and misplaced like I was born in the wrong century, so if I see a piece with puff sleeves and lace I’m all over it! LOL And I’m really excited that Victorian style is now trending because you can find piece after perfect piece very easily. It took me ten years + to find the pieces I previously had vs. last year when I found 30 pieces in 2 stores in one afternoon. So I’m loving it! Anddddd now I’m stylish instead of being wierd so I’m down with that! LOL

Screenshot_20180203-141132.jpg

Do you have any tips on where to find awesome Halloween clothing for the rest of us halloween addicts?

It really depends on your personal style! I love the goth brands like Killstar though you can find solid pieces anywhere. I love the discount stores like Home Goods/Marshalls because you can find nice pieces for $25 a pop vs. $50-$100+ a pop. Like I found two goth black lace Victorian tops there for $30 each. I almost cried I was so happy. LOL

Do you wear Halloween/Horror styled clothes all year?

I wear Victorian inspired clothing all year but usually combined with more modern pieces (like jeans or a modern t-shirt). I’m not a traditional goth in all black because I really love color too. For me it’s more about the Victorian influence mixed with modern pieces.

What’s your favourite Halloween clothing /accessories/bags/shoes tec?
Anything with lace! I’m a total sucker and I’ll buy it all especially if it’s intricate and black. For accessories I love anything detailed and floral and of course, antique-inspired. I’m also obsessed with rings! I have over 200. My grandfather thought this was so hilarious, and he used to tease me about it. He’d give me a $20 bill and would say «Now go buy yourself some rings with this!» and he would laugh. But anything sterling silver is usually my jam (I’ve found brass and other materials discolor my fingers). I have a lot of James Avery jewelry as that was trendy in my high school, and they have some really pretty pieces and it’s all sterling silver or gold and very high quality. My favorite necklace is a gold crescent moon pendant from them. It’s just stunning! They are @jamesavery on IG and
www.jamesavery.com.

I discovered Rewind Jewelry this fall, and I’m obsessed! It’s a steampunk line and the pieces are all handmade from old watch parts. I bought a ribcage ring from them which I’m in love with. The ribcage is handcarved brass and the ring itself is silver. It’s amazing, and it was love at first sight! Anddd he makes a jack o’lantern watch necklace that’s to-die-for! It’s legit incredible! I’ll have to splurge on one of those this year. You can find them on IG @rewindjewelry and at http://www.rewindjewelry.com.

For shoes, I’m obsessed with anything suede. Why, I have no idea! It’s hot as Hades most of the time here in Texas so I usually wear leather suede sandals in the summer and then suede boots in the fall/winter. I like natural materials: real leather, cotton and sterling silver. I’m not a tennis shoe/sneaker/trainer kinda gal, and would gravitate towards ballet slippers (suede too! Yes I have 4 colors of the same shoe) or a low heel before I put on sneakers. It’s also wayyy too hot to wear closed-toed shoes here in the summer. I shop at DSW or Nordstrom for shoes usually. This year I would love to get a great pair of Killstar boots to break it up a little!

Screenshot_20180203-141557.jpg

As far as bags go, SURPRISE!!! I like suede. LOL I also have a brown leather crossbody bag with fringe I wear basically every day because I hate carrying bags with my hands (I’m wayyy too lazy for that and suede is heavy!) LOL. I collected a TON of Kate Spade bags and used those when I had a more classic work style at the old company I worked for. I still have a few of those, but I don’t use them as often since they aren’t my usual style. I would LOVE to get my hands on a @lovepainandstiches bag one day! Their Halloween bags are incredible!

Have you worked hard on your style?

Screenshot_20180203-141631.jpg
My style has always been Victorian bohemian naturally though I dressed preppy and classic when I worked in a corporate office (my job was pretty formal meaning suits and tops with nice pants, but I got away with a more causal look). I’m an artist and enjoy mixing prints and textures, so that was stifling in a way, but I still managed to put a creative (and gothic) spin on it. A favorite everyday brand is Free People, though I gravitate more towards their romantic Victorian pieces than the hippie pieces. I like things that are flowy and cotton and lace of course and anything floral. The more details the better. I think I’ve worked harder trying to find the perfect pieces for my style than on developing my style if that makes sense? Trying to find Victorian pieces is always challenging when it’s not on trend. If I could wear the entire wardrobe of Crimson Peak I would! It’s to die for!
